Not all producers made half bottle. I find half bottles hard to find even in Europe.

I like getting half bottle given a choice

Yeah, i think the demand is low. So far in SG i only know Enoteca at Taka carries half bottles. But even then, the selection is very limited to the few french labels.

Visited Chateau Rauzan-Segla, Lagrange and Ferriere. Tasted all 3 and by far my fave is the Segla.

Really an eye opener for a wine newbie like me, esp when they explain the processes (still can't remember all the steps LOL). And I went when they just planted the vines, so it's not really picturesque. Drove past Chateau Margaux, some people in the tour gasped as we rolled past haha

I wish I had more time, then I could visit St Emilion and Pessac Leognan!

Yeah we had no time at all, the tour guide did want to stop by Latour or Margaux but once we're done at the last chateau it was already 6+pm. I enquired abt how much it'll cost to have a tasting session at the first growths and the guide went "enough to start another financial crisis" lol..

For rauzan segla i had the 2008 one, then it's second wine Segla i had the 2010.

For Lagrange I had the 08 as well, then the second wine Les Fiefs was 09. The white wine i tasted i forgot the vintage.

For Ferriere i had the 06, second wine was 07.

I heard 2005 was a fantastic year

Perhaps it might be worth checking out some of the 2nd growth chateaux in future. Some of them are on par with the 1st growth, yet may cost partially lesser

2005 is one of the finest vintage but also expensive. Even though it is nearing its 10th year mark, many of the wines are still in the early stages of maturity and tannic to drink at the moment.

Heard Parker may be reassessing the 2005 again, and if he upgrades the existing ratings the prices may rise further.

yeah Rauzan-Segla is the only 2nd Growth i went to, the other two are third i think.

Would like to try some 2nd growth wines, i rarely buy cos my palate is still new to this, dont wanna waste a good wine.

Yeah I could sense that it was because I couldn't find a single 1st/2nd growth 2005 vintage in any wine shops in BDX (the chateaus do sell them tho, saw some 05s sitting around). Man i'm so new to wines it's alot for me to absorb, but how does one define a vintage as a great year? Just the weather?

Yeah, agree. You may want to expand your palate first before investing heavily into expensive wines and end up you don't like it.
Just take your time, try out some entry level wines, attend some wine tasting events find out what kind of style you like. Take some notes and then read up on some tasting notes and compare those with yours.
There are some great reference Ikileo has posted on this thread and you may refer to that.

2005 is considered a great vintage not just because of perfect weather but also there is a great level of consistency for many appellations. Most of the Cheatuax made great wines.

You may have also learnt during your visit to the Cheatuax how the wines were made and store and also the type of soil they used to plant the vines.

So basically the weather / climate, type of soil used (eg. gravel, chalk, limestones,) condition of vines (old, young), wine making techniques (extraction methods, choosing the harvest dates, storage methods (new / old oak, steel tanks, duration) - all of these factors contributed to the success of a great wine in a vintage.

I read that some of you shipped crates of wine back to Singapore. I'm going to France 2 weeks later and am thinking of doing this. So the Spore govt will tax us the alcohol and GST? Any other additional costs I should be wary of? Thanks!

Note that you should be able to save the French GST (called TVA) when buying in France for export out of the EU.

How will you chose the shipping company? Would love to know which ones are competitive. Will be in Europe at the end of the month myself.

I've read that France Post Office can do shipping and some chateaus will also do it. Or can always bring to the airport and use their international delivery services.
So probably can't buy the high end wines since it's not proper shipping.

I'm more concerned with the Singapore side on the taxes and paperwork.

Recommendations for local food and wine pairing

Hey y'all,

This is my first post in the wine forum ;P.

Does anyone have some good suggestions for wine pairing for local food. Specifically I'm doing a rendang next week and some other spicy Indo-thai dishes.

Thanks so much!

Gewurztraminer matches quite well with (not too) spicy food.

If very spicy, beer is the only way.
