Hi, it's my first time going for a winter holiday.
28 Dec to 7Jan.
If I was to purchase my winter jacket in Korea after I landed, like going to outlet mall once I touch down, do u think they will be selling winter wear?

Would like to seek advise whether to purchase locally in SG or buy in Korea. And what brand or type of jacket would u buy.

Thanks in advance ^^

Wa that period is close to the coldest in Korea... Outlets all sell winter wear and is much cheaper than Singapore... but if you are afraid of the cold... I would recommend you buy one in Singapore. Because to reach the outlets.. you would have to walk outside and for someone from the tropics, walking in sub-zero temperatures with the wind blowing is not a joke.

Definitely go for down jackets, try go for water proof ones in case it snows. wet soggy jackets become useless as snow would melt with your body heat. Layer up inside with things like uniqlo heat tech. Go for the jackets will higher fluff count instead of feathers. Fluff traps more heat than pure feathers. Usually in a region of 80% fluff/20% fluff would be good enough. If possible, try to find seamless down jackets as the fluff will come out at the seams over time and it would be less warm if you intending to use it a lot in the future.

Hood is important as well as if the wind is really piercing, putting your hood up will help a lot.

Go try larger uniqlo's in Singapore. Not that expensive. Even though might not be as good as north face but it has served me well. I even hiked with it hahah.

Get this, on discount somemore then go to outlet in Korea to get better winter jackets by hiking brands in Korea which you can get like 120 - 150 sgd if still not warm enough. Just layer more when you go cause ULDs I feel quite thin when facing cold winters but at least you won't freeze. Also, cover cover cover is important! Try not to expose too much skin cause wind can make you feel the pain. If you noticed, people wear mask, scarfs in winter and hoods up! It really helps as ears, face, necks and hands can feel like needles piercing in frigid winds. And if you thinking of getting heat-techs, get the extra or even ultra warm cause the normal heat-techs are useless...

Edit: Uniqlo used to sell thicker down jackets in Singapore but I guess they weren't that popular? I bought a down jacket from Uniqlo in Korea (not ULDs) and it served me well.

Korea being a hiking nation, has crazy loads of brands and all of these brands would release their winter jackets even before that period and during that period.

There are numerous Korean brands like marmot, black yak, Kolon sports, K2 and international brands like North Face, Columbia, Merell and the list continues... You can go down there to hunt for those as the outlets would have all of them all at once. One outlet that I liked while I was in Korea was the gasan digital complex area - mario outlets, w digital mall etc. W-digital mall has an adidas outlet as well which will possibly sell winter jackets as well!

Take your pick, try on and look for the best prices.

Anyone any opinion or have ever try the $99 Uniglo Blocktech Parka as an outer shell for winter in Korea?
I understand that korea's winter is super cold especially when wind blows.
Will this be effective as an outer shell?
I am considering using this as it's waterproof, windproof and most importantly, it's real compact and lightweight as compare to most outer shells I currently owned.
My family will be travelling to Korea for the winter in Dec for the 3rd time.

Don't bother, it acts more like a raincoat/jacket. It doesn't really insulate you from the cold unless you're already wearing a thick jacket underneath.
