There is a cheaper but less elegant (or aesthetically pleasing) solution: cut the wire of the DC cable, join a pair of long wires between the cut ends, and then tape up the joints with electrical tape. Doubt the additional resistance of the wire is going to affect the operation of the camera.

There is a new player on the market, alternative to Dropcam which I used extensively and I was very happy. However they were bought by Nest (Google) and Nest is pushing its own app which is not as polished. As they say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Netmato cost US$200.

Hi Mine is
Connectors: 5.5x2.1mm Barrel Male, 5.5x2.1mm Barrel Female.

can i get this 5.5x2.1mm ? what is this POE ?

Power over Ethernet, I bought my injector & splitter from MARIX, their POE splitter is using 5.5x2.1mm. For using with the common china brands, they provide you with a converter. Maybe bring your camera to them to test out.

But, they already stopped all sales til next week, cos of moving office.
Or do what boss suggest, self cut and extend.

Now that's not a very good way of extending. I do not recommend this for anyone without electronics or electrical engineering knowledge

Care to share the dangers of doing this? I have no electronics or electrical engineering background and is keen to learn. I do a lot of DIY stuff that involving cutting and joining wires (including AC ones like lighting for cabinets etc.).

hi apology if this appears to be noob. if i'm getting a IP cam with cloud storage features; with the constant 24/7 streaming, i presume it does takes up my bandwidth too right? any other pointers i should be looking out for during selection. tks

yes it does, bandwidth depends on cameras setting, most would upload at lower resolution to save bandwidth, while some stream at HD. Relatively depends on each vendor

Ok. Need to make sure wire AWG is sufficient because of resistance. Need to make sure copper contact points do not oxidise and cause resistance increase or open circuit.

Understand, but would this matter if we are merely doing it on the DC wire? I've seen some wirings on the lighting of cabinets that are joined via the same way, and those are on the AC wires (240V, 13 amp).

AC is ok because margin is sufficient for small devices such as camera adapter which is 10W. At 240V, current is approx. 10/240 which is 42mA. So with 1ohm increase, the voltage drop is negligible. At 5V, 2A, this is 2V drop. So only 3V for the camera.

I have just bought a wireless IP camera & I realise that the original power cable is not long enough. Any recommendation to extend the cable?

There r extension cables specially for IP cameras out there. Or can just own DIY cut n extend your self. Ultimately distance depends on your device n PSU rating n type of cable used

Thank guys, using power extension is not a bad idea. So, is using power extension better or try to DIY the power cable is better?
