Sorry reply late, seldom online now. If the wan ip is the ip of your RG, means your RG is not in bridge mode. If it is in bridge mode, your dlink should be the one with the wan ip. (Something like last time ADSL dial up days, Thomson modem as bridge, while the ADSL userid/pw is entered at the router side.)

I believe your case the RG is not in bridge mode, or for some reason cannot be in bridge mode. Why don't you try connect your cam to the RG instead to the dlink, or if must connect to dlink, set it up as a switch.

Thanks spell!

i followed lester chan blog exact steps and same.. seems like starhub doesnt allow bridge mode on RG? or is it my fault for doing it wrongly. maybe i will go research on this! however i will try connect my cam to RG and do my DDNS on RG to see if it can work ^^

I guess if the field of view (FOV) is narrow, a fixed position camera will not be able to view everything. The advantage of a pan-and-tilt camera is that you can change the view of the camera to cover a bigger area e.g. a living/dining room.

For me, all my cameras (10+) are PT ones. I find that it is difficult to position any fixed position camera to be able to cover the whole room. For example, I need to put the camera in a corner, but there is no power point there, or where there is a power point, the camera cannot cover the whole room.

Several models have this capability, including Trendnet, SMC, Foscam, Dlink etc. So far, I find Mediapro (5th floor, SLS, 2 doors away from Laser) has a very wide range of wireless IP camera. You can download their priceguide at

Hi Dr ARCHer,

Sorry...newbie to IP camera.
Which one you can recommend where I can record directly to USB drive (without PC or wireless connection)?

Which one you can recommend where I can record to SD card?

My preference will be USB drive since can record longer video (continuous), not those motion detect video.
Thank again.

What is your budget? If you don't mind a fixed view camera, then Edimax's IC-3030iWN @ S$189 allows you to record to an SD card. If you want pan-and-tilt function, then the H series @ S$229 is a good choice. Further up in price is the Edimax IC-7010PTn (S$369), Dlink DCS-5230L (S$429), Dlink DCS-5635 (S$1088), just to name a few. Note that they all record to SD/microSD. Not sure if there are any models that allow recording to USB directly (unless via a USB drive attached to a router).

I have 3 units of the Foscam....i always have a problem in which it seems maxonline dynamic ip once auto changes, my IP cams would be down.

I always have to go in to my portforwarding settings to change the new IP address in order to work.

Anyway i can set it to auto update to move according to the dynamic IP address?

Are you using a dynamic DNS service? SUch a service update your URL with the latest IP address assigned by the ISP.

I've 10 dlink cameras of various models at home.

Before starting decide how many and what types of cameras you require and your budget. Would one brand of camera be your best option or a mix of brands? Consider the troubleshooting, service support and the softwares available for viewing (ALL the different brands of cameras if you decide to go by this option) on your handphone, notebook etc. Ask yourself - do you require every inch of your house to be covered (or just adequate coverage) and what detail you want to look into the picture?

Firstly, fixed camera is cheaper than PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) camera. Assuming you want to save costs then installing many fixed cameras at strategic locations with good initial planning (like power point locations, wireless vs wired, angle of coverage etc) and with one or two PTZ cameras to cover dead areas will do a good job. There's no need to install all PTZ cameras in your home.

One thing to note. If the PTZ camera is panning then it's useless to record video. Fixed camera is better at that.

For camera with small field of view (FOV) you can attach an external small, lightweight wide-angle lens on the outside like what I've done. This will help to reduce the number of cameras required too.

An additional point to note is that foregt all those "low" light cameras if you want to see/record in low lighting situation. Only IR cameras are effective for this job. You can add external IR light if you find the camera's IR is no strong enough.

Hi Dr ARCHer,

Thanks for all the information. Indeed very helpful to me.
On the IP Camera, how about Prolink PIC1005WN?
If I am not wrong, the PIC1005WN can record continuous video instead of motion detection snap shot offer by Edimax, Dlink, etc?
Any comment are welcome?

I haven't tried the Prolink IP cam, so I can't comment. However, recording continuous video would take up a lot of space. Do you really want to do that? Review the recorded footage is also going to be tedious and boring.

You can do that if your IP camera allows you to define multiple users. Some IP cameras allow you only 3 users: visitor, operator and administrator.
