3 pairs

1) Brown balmoral oxford with straight captoe. No brogueing. This will function as the cornerstone of your shoe wardrobe. Same functionality as a conventional brown gooseneck captoe oxford, but I have always found balmoral oxfords particularly elegant. And it'll be a different design compared to the conventional black captoe oxford.

2) Black captoe oxford. Well, most Singaporean men still find that they want a pair a black shoes. Nothing wrong with that.

3) Adelaide oxford. Brogued. Brown. Just to add variety to the collection. Adelaides are a very balanced design imo.

If extended to 5-8 pairs

4) A "dress" chukka. Dark brown. 3 eyelets. Sleek last. Topied sole. Incredibly versatile. To wear with jeans, on travels (because you can wear it with casual and formal wear, reducing number of shoes to pack). And the topy allows you to wear it in rain and mildly wet weather.

5) A dress derby. Also dark brown. Smooth calf. 2 or 3 eyelets. Single leather sole. For days that you want a formal pair of shoes but oxfords bore you.

6) Brown double monks. Just for variety and for days you are just too irritated for laces.

7) Loafers in brown suede or calf. I prefer penny or string. Tassel loafers might be a little "dandy" for some. Just for dress down days, shorts, jeans.

8) A chunky ba***rd. Brown suede or grained calf, dainite soles, derby, semi or full brogue. For bad weather dress down days.

Just curious, what's your thoughts on burgundy/oxblood?

Dark, deep burgundy / oxblood is a nice colour, and pretty versatile. A touch loud though, which is why I don't wear it much. If the number of shoes is expanded to more than 10, I'd probably put in a burgundy pair somewhere.

Anyone here with Alden shoes experience :s8:

Whats your opinion on their shoes in general apart from being overpriced. LOL.

Really like the looks of the Alden Leisure Handsewn (LHS) Penny Loafer.

I wear UK 7.5 for the Carmino Lorenzo 910 (Rain Last). Any idea what the LHS will be in US size (Van Last)?

Hi bros, I am planning to get a good pair of shoes either monkstrap/loafers for work and casual purpose. But i lean towards to loafers just because I love the looks. I saw a pair of CNES black loafers and I wonder if you guys think it is okay for work?

I understand that loafers are just casual shoes but it seems like with a black socks it kinda blends well.

As for the monk strap I am thinking of this:
https://www.straitsestablishment.com/collections/cnes-solitaire/products/paul-double-monks-black

But i do not know if this will be casual enough with jeans/chinos/ dress down day. Or even with trousers that are cuffed.

In SG, the culture is not too strict on shoe styles for work. Leather shoes (or even faux leather) + socks usually would suffice unless your workplace is stricter/has set certain standards.

Would suggest more than 1 shoe for rotation and that Brown colour is more versatile than black for matching

So you meant this loafer would suffice as working shoe? But a brown one would be more flexible in both formal/casual occasions?

He meant colour coordination with pants. Black shoes only goes well with black pants. If you have a full wardrobe of black dress slacks, having all black shoes will be fine. :s13:

When getting new shoes, I always look at what pants I have first and if they go well with the shoes. If I just want those shoes/colour, and I don't have anything to pair with, I'll get new pants. :s13:

Actually I think black dress shoes can match most dark/mid-coloured navy and grey business pants (which are pretty much the norm business pants colours) and are still the safest choice for office purpose.

But I find that black dress shoes don't go well with more casual pants (e.g. chinos, jeans), regardless of the pants colour.

Yup, that's essentially what I'm saying!

Brown shoes easier to match with casual wear like jeans and chinos. Dare i say, loafers can pair well with shorts and berms too. Brown also easier to match with bolder colours like khaki, green, maroon etc

If you read @thundermarch's recent post, out of 8 styles only 1 was the quintessential black captoe oxford for formal wear, everything else recommended was brown

This is because I wanted a black loafer for me to wear for work and also casually with fancier trousers like flannel pants/golf pants kinda look. So I dont know if the brown works well..
