Sales assistant told me LLYRs are made in Laos.

Might not be a fair comparison as I haven't tried EEA's more recent works! For me, comfort is key and I'm not too particular on finishings/leather quality/creasing etc. In this regard, LLYRs beat EEA imo

How much are ed et al these days. They have been developing new lasts and a whole different range to take on the likes of European makers right?

Can't comment much about EEA sole quality, though I have 4 pairs as well and all from different range.
1 MTO from few years back, 1 blake stitched pair which was discontinued, 1 primaute, and 1 loafer from 3rd or 4th collection.

All had topy on them except for the loafer so can't really tell if they are worse than others.

I'm curious about the stitching coming off, was it because the sole was worn down until the stitching was frayed or did it just come off even when the sole was new? GY soles are stitched such that each stitch will not affect the others, even if it was worn and frayed the shoe should be fine.

If it's an anomaly, you should bring it back. They have been most willing to rectify most problems, from what I've heard.

the stitching came off on the sole where it was worn down. just an observation that the heel of EEA seems to wear out faster than the pair of cole haan im wearing now (i wore both pairs every day except weekend).

the upside is that EEA does fit better for me but a bit too narrow near the toes area.

349 for their RTW, MTOs are from 500+and up I think. They've revamped their MTO pricing. GMTOs are 499.

If you wear the soles down to the stitching, the stitching will come off, that's a given. If the soles are not splitting its fine. Obviously if you've worn down the sole by a lot, a resole should be done.

Heel I assume is the rubber part that you are talking about. Different rubber will wear out at different rates, just like tyres. Grip and durability are inversely proportional.

That's your problem!

Also, are your cole haan shoes goodyear welted? If not there's no pt comparing them with GYW EEAs.

Just an old (but highly experienced/skilled) geezer who always makes it a point to call out the shortcut in manufacturing that is the modern Goodyear welt process :s13:

Whats wrong with Meermin though? Other than the comms which may be iffy at times, their products are pretty much value for money.

tbh when we point out stuff like, stitching, finishing issues etc, they're really minor cosmetic issues. Typical First World problem stuff. :s13:

My pair of meermins still serving me fine

Haha I fail to log in for 2 days and there's a full argument re this gent. Must be quite the legend on SF!

I think I have been somewhat procrastinating - I generally like to try on what I buy, especially shoes. I've once written to Meermin asking them which of their lasts will fit me better. (Hiro, 9UK). But with Meermin there is absolutely no way to do that unfortunately. Then there is the USD35 (then) shipping to SG, which brings the price close to the loake 1880s I think? And then the cycle starts again :zonia:

I think I'm just indecisive.

You can ask for their shoes to be made in wider widths. There'll be a small upcharge for that.

If those were entry level loakes i think you'll do fine with the 1880 range from them if you are looking for something better. 1880s a re significantly better.

Local retailer for loakes meaning Robinson's?

Do you mean for Meermin, for their RTWs sir? First time I'm hearing this if so. Would you happen to know what the upcharge is?

Also, yes - Robinson's. I had a bunch of vouchers expiring and didn't know what else to buy so jumped right in. This was up from Hush Puppies, so then it was a big jump. Depending on which side you see it from it could've been the best, or worst decision of my life :)

How do llyr and edetal compare? Finishing n leather quality?

I was told they come from the same vietnam factory..

I have no idea cuz I don't own any EEA shoes... but I do know that LLYR shoes are more affordable!

In terms of comfort, it's certainly there...

Given everybody's feet is shaped differently, I think the best way to determine fit is to try all the shoes one is interested in, and see how they look when worn.

I do try the fit of shoes I've not bought when travelling so I know fit and helps in ordering for the future.

A little hard to tell from the angle of the pics. Is that a split or just excess material that had the colour rubbed off?

New to this shoe care area guys. Because I usually get a new pair when the soles are worn out. Does topy/vibram only necessary for leather sole shoes? My previous shoes are Clarks and Aldo, both of them had a rubber soles.

Different strokes for different folks.

Topy/vibrams to protect the soles and offer you better grip.

If you don't mind wearing out leather soles and replacing them when the time comes then don't bother.
