Hi seniors,

I have been reading the thread and have collected many good information on a good pair of shoes.

Hence I am thinking of getting a pair of loakes/barkers from the Herrings online store. As this is my first pair of online purchase, I would like to check on the accuracy of the fittings for the seniors who have purchase the shoes from Herring previously.

I wear dress shoes of EU40 while my casual shoes are EU41. As I am unable to try it prior to my purchase on Herrings, would like to get feedback whether would the size fitting differ much? I am intending to get the EU40 based on my previous dress shoe sizes.

Suggest u buy from Robinson Shoes if it is loake/barker. Same price as Herrings, but free shipping.

Don't worry. If they practise good customer service (which I hope they do), at the worst they should at least give u a free return.

Basically u have nothing to lose writing back to them rather than accepting the shoes and always have to feel unhappy about it.

Of cos it also depends how and what you wrote to them.. but that's too late and no point mulling over since the email's been written and sent.

first let me upload a pic of my meermin DMs that just came yesterday
observe the area near the welt just behind the toecap area
there is a very obvious white line that appears the leather is discoloured / not dyed properly

This pair sold for 320 euros. 256 without tax.
This is not cheap by any means and in fact is close to a pair of non shell cordovan carminas. And the carmina shoes i received yesterday are tip top.
So i don't think i "got a really cheap deal and should accept all defects"

It happens fairly frequently, among some other things, Some are fine with it, some are not, and usually get replacements or refunds in some cases. It's happened to me before, and I've also experienced some issues with the welting. For me, I don't really care, and I've never bothered with getting a replacement or refund. I understand how thundermarch feeling though.

That is very true but i believe his pair is from the LM line and not basic line, so its certainly 'less acceptable'.

Coincidentally on another forum, there is currently some discussion and negative feedback on meermin as well as some comments that loake is preferred over meermin (presumably comparing the loake 1880 vs meermin basic line)

I've experienced more issues with Linea Maestro shoes than the ones from the Classic line. In fact, I've stopped buying anything from Linea Maestro because value-wise I'd rather top up a little bit more for another maker.

I do understand the hits and misses of online purchases and if it were a pair from the classic line, I certainly would have ignored it.
I am also aware that nothing is perfect, so I believe I have tempered by expectations accordingly. So I understand how cost should be balanced against expectations. (Thanks Ballgag for the article, will peruse it when I have more time)
But I do believe they charge more for their Linea Maestro line because they put more effort into it, and thus, consumers should rightfully expect a certain standard of workmanship.
Pay $5 for char kway teow, I expect $5 of char kway teow.
Pay $300 for a dinner, well then I definitely expect better cooking, better ingredients, better service and so on. This is natural I think.
Anyway I'm sorry. I'm just ranting.

I think you are right. Thinking about my purchases, I think I am going to cancel my remaining order and go with Carmina

I'm pretty sure a pair of dub monks(or any basic Carmina pair really) comes up to less than $600 through Skoak. Like $560-$580 tops. I could be wrong though, haven't bought anything since the price increase.

Gentlemens footwear is only really good when they have markdowns.

On a more positive note
I also received my Carmina shell cordovan navy wholecuts and black split toe single monks.
Finishing and overall quality I think is definitely excellent.
Surprisingly the single monk in simpson last size 9 fit very nicely and was not loose in any way.
However, the shell wholecut in rain last size 8.5 was suprisingly more loose. I had a noticeable heel slip in my left foot.
I will post pictures later
But I am slightly concerned that in the long term this will cause problems with the shoe (more creasing / folding of leather at the instep / outside of the foot and ankle area)
Im hoping you Bros could give some suggestions.
Also, I intend to give the shells a good creaming and polish first before wearing them. I do not have the deer bone yet.
Is it ok to apply Saphir Cordovan creme (neutral) then Saphir wax (navy) without using deer bone?
