Working Shoe for Young Exec

I bought a pair of Bata's yesterday.

Over the last 7 years or so I have tried Batas (maybe 3 pairs), Hush Puppies (2 pairs), Windsor (2 pairs) (Indian brand), Taminto (1 pair) (also Indian brand), Obermain (1 pair).

I think my Hush Puppies were really comfortable but quite expensive at around 140+. These lasted me around 10 months.

Obermain lasted me around 6 months before the rubber sole developed a leak. Quite disappointing.

The Indian shoes were the longest lasting, cheap, and have great durability, but not easily available here in SG. I think Mustafa holds Windsor, though but I'll be damned if I buy shoes from there - somehow any footwear I buy from Mustafa lasts me only 3 months. Maybe it has to do with storage.

So I've gone back to Bata. Historically (based on the $70 to $80 shoes) I've noticed that they are reliable and last me at least 10 months.

They have a new range with hardened, higher quality rubber soles. The main reason I have to throw away shoes is because the rubber wears away completely and develops a leak. Horrible in SG weather. The new shoes look fairly good actually, and they are being sold at 109 and 129. I took the plunge on the $110 model.

I also invested in some non-animal leather preservative (an alternative to the mink oil that the lady at Vivo Bata kept recommending me). Seems to work better than Kiwi.

i am thinking of plunging into geox leather shoes, to have the airy feel.

but heard the rubber soles may not last beyond 1 yr, and is quite expensive.

That is a tough one.
I think you might have to take a look at Regal Shoes from Japan.
They stock them at Taka, I know that they carry smaller sizes.

However, shoes are about SGD$300 - SGD$500.

Apparently, there is a Suede / Nubuck Conditioner by Ecco available. I've never used it.

My routine for Suede is
1) Brush to remove dirt
2) Suede Eraser to get rid of stains and cleaner if really dirty
3) Damp cloth to wipe everything down
4) Brush again to raise nap of suede
5) Waterproofing spray

Mind sharing what waterproofing spray you use and where did you get it from? Just bought two pairs of suede shoes and I am currebtly how to take care of them in hopes of having them last longer.

I use the B Care Protector for Leather, Suede, Nubuck and Fabric. Available at Bata stores (this is the only thing I buy from Bata). So far I have no issue with the spray, I spray 3 very light coats on.

However, I have also heard good things about Red Wings Silicone spray. I only recommend using Silicon on Suede as it is a durable material and doesn't require much care. Can try the redwings store at Suntec and see if they have. (disclaimer : I have never used it before but silicone is an excellent waterproofer)

Using Silicon on normal leather shoes will dry out the leather over time, and cause cracks.

Previously was using Saphir's Super Invulner spray which I smuggled back from France in my check in luggage, but I have not seen it sold in SG, and it can't be shipped via air post due to it being an aerosol spray.

I bought a pair of black Loake from Robinsons last month for $199. I wish to buy another pair but its quite expensive in Robinsons, going for about $350. I wish to buy another pair online but where can I obtain those promotion codes that can entitle me to freebies eg shoetrees??

Loake has a few product lines, and the 1880 line (which is made in England) will cost about $350-450 in SG.

The main difference comes from sole (leather or rubber) and upper material (corrected grain vs full grain).

You can try the shoes on at Robinsons. They carry Loake range.
Btw, the size quoted is in UK so if you are a US 10.5, you can probably get away with UK 9.5 or 10 depending on how wide your feet are.

Yesterday went to Robinsons @ raffles city but don't have.. the salesgirl say centrepoint carry the brand. Will go and try it.

What are the different upper materials?

Calf or full grain leather has not been sanded or corrected to remove blemishes etc. it is a naturally soft and flexible material, and has excellent breathability. Properly looked after, this type of leather will develop an attractive patina with age.

Polished or 'corrected grain' leather has the natural leather finish corrected and a top coat added to provide the final highly polished appearance. This type of leather is more resistance to water and staining, but will not develop the same patina as with calf or full grain leather. It is also initially a stiffer material, and the shoes may require a short period of breaking in when new.
