Do most of you guys Topy or vibram your shoes?

I like the leather details at the bottom of my soles and think it's a waste to have it covered.

But I'd rather preserve the life span of my shoes.. Or can I wear them for a year, and then have it topied/vibram after?

Its a polarising question but I topy.

You shouldn't wait that long if you do intend to topy.
If you are wearing the shoes for a year, every other day, the sole might be quite worn out already.

But you should wear them for a while first. I read that the slight wear helps the topy go on better.

A good cobbler will grind down a thin layer of the sole to help the topy adhere better.
If there is slight wear, the cobbler might have to grind away more to achieve a flat surface.

That's good to know, didn't occur to me that it should be even as well .

That said I feel leather soles just need time to get used to. Now I can walk even during rain without too much trouble, though I still get the occasional slip (but no fall )

You can achieve those "swirls" by polishing. It is present in calfskin as well but depends on the people who finish your shoes at the shoe factory whether they antique their own shoes.

It is actually what we call antiquing can be achieved by yourself through polishing.

i dont know but personally the feel of a leather sole vs a rubber sole is very different.
Leather soles felt more shiok...

Use a different darker color wax polish.

Say for example I have a shoe in Oxblood that I want to give some antiquing to, so I would use oxblood cream, wax and a DARKER(Black/Navy) wax polish to be applied on the areas that I would want the color to be darker at.

Don't coat the whole shoe with the darker colored wax but coat areas that you want the antiquing to take place.

Its not a grip issue for me, but I wear through my soles quite fast, so the topy does help

I know what you mean... I like the feel of leather soles too. But if adding rubber soles would preserve the life of my shoes, I'd rather choose the latter.

That looks awesome! Does that mean you need 2 difference color tones of polish to do the lighter and darker side separately?

Is that the main cause of something like that? I have a shoe horn but sometimes I don't use it....
