Working Shoe for Young Exec

can I get the gurus' advice on this:

I am going to Bangkok next week for 3 days and I am looking to make one/two working shoes. Any particular shops to look out for? I am ok if it needs more days, and the product has to be shipped to SG, but it must be a decent pair of shoes.

My budget is about 300 sgd per pair if it is worth it. Not sure if this will get me anything decent.

Not exactly. If the understanding is that there are different types of corrected grain, then we can say bata and Pedro can be different. But I see all corrected grain as the same, then Pedro and bata are the same, so comparing material quality is bullsh*t. So yea, telling me that bata is worse than Pedro because it uses lower grade corrected grain leather deserves a middle finger.

If you think semantics are unimportant, think again.

Wow. Prices have gone up. When I first used them, they were 112 EURO (185 SGD) after VAT deduction. So even if you bought two, you didn't have to pay the 7% GST.

Shipping was 40 euros (68 SGD) for 2 pairs.

I usually bought two each order, for a total of ~ 440.

That worked out to 220 SGD apiece.

Admittedly, that was a long time ago. I won't be surprised there might be more price hikes since they're still comparatively affordable.

Aiyo, not saying it's unimportant, just that I think he was expressing it in a somewhat singlish way:

1) It's low grade leather
2) It's corrected grain leather
1 + 2 in Singlish = low grade corrected grain leather

Of course, this is just my interpretation and that sentence does mean something else in standard English (as per your post).

Any alternative recommendations for shoes I can be physically in Singapore (as opposed to online) as I would like to try out the size and look before committing to buy.

Anw hi guys, virgin post in this thread, and (relatively, in terms of fine shoes anyway) new to the sartorial scene in general.

spent the past weeks reading through the 200 pages in this thread as well as other blogs and on styleforum (whilst at work ) and just got a pair of Ed's Shenton II in antiqued brown based on what I saw here.

I can't imagine corrected grain leather having 'grades'...

So long as the price is reasonable for what you are getting...

I apologize for being the cause of the "Great Bata Debate". It started due to my recommendation for the Ambassador series (the ones with stitched construction and full leather soles) on my fb page.

From Shoeshine Uncle's POV, top grain leather actually can be shined beautifully but it lacks of the imperfections of full grain leather which give the shoes character.

To my knowledge, there are different types (not grades) of non full grain leather.

- top grain leather
the texture varies from the amount of sanding and buffing done, the designer brand shoes like to use very smooth leather which look somewhat like patent leather. The Bata ambassadors belong to this category.

- corrected grain leather
a pattern is applied onto the leather, most commonly seen is the pebble grain, commonly seen on very casual shoes like boat shoes, loafers.

- patent leather
plastic coated leather high gloss, used for very formal evening shoes, ladies shoes and handbags, military dress shoes. very easy to scratch very hard to buff away.

Having said all these, even top grain leather shoes have various means of construction, the worse is gluing the upper to the sole, thus a certain "bespoke" shoemaker earning its infamy in the forums.

The many Bata Ambassador I saw at Peninsular Plaza this week are all rubber soles without stitching, which I conclude to be cemented soles.
Leather is also quite bad with many clear visable scuffs and scratches.

I think the quality of Bata Ambassador series are dropping drastically

That is because the consumers do not buy the leather sole stitched shoes, even when they are priced cheaper.
