Double Degree in Bachelor of Science (Business Administration) and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) - Full-time

Developed and awarded by University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, US

http://www1.sim.edu.sg/sge/pub/gen/sge_pub_gen_content.cfm?mnuid=188&ID=482

Are the above degrees recognised, and how does UB's Business administration degree par up with other SIM Global business degrees (such as UOL, RMIT etc)

As for those who are already pursuing the double degree now, how is it like? Is it intense, and would I be able to cope with club activities as well?

Please offer your advice and insight. Thanks!!

with what i know, private degree is private degree, not fr local uni. double degree gives u advantage over norm private degree but it's still not on par with local uni degree

If you are looking for a business related job, your Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) will not help you & only your Bachelor of Science (Business Administration) will help you.

Your degree is a D/L degree & in the employer point of view is still a D/L degree.

So wasting $50K+ for a D/L degree vs $20K+ D/L degree will still give you a $2K+ salary, which is better?

So getting a $20K+ is better & I still have $30K+ for another degree like MBA & etc.

You can say that you still have a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) & add up it is worth $50K+ but if you are not going to use it, it will be useless.

In this case, your Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) will only be useful for showing off.

my goodness, a whole day and not a single soul willing to offer advice?

my opinion is.. it is not worth it at all @ 50ksgd... i rather pay extra 20-30ksgd to do my degree at australia. why not go for UOB biz management degree after graduate apply for msc finance/accounting/ACCA/CFA... it is still look way better than with just an UB undergrad degree.

after graduate apply for msc finance/accounting/ACCA/CFA...

why are you so quick to assume he is interested in finance/accounting?

employers often employ psych grads over business grads for advertising, marketing and communications jobs. just look at the major agencies in singapore and you will see they are inundated with social science grads.

If both are fresh graduates, I will employ the guy with 2 degree rather then 1 degree to worth the $.

But in term of experience graduates, the 1 that can prove to me that he can sell + he earn a lot for his last company will be employ.

I disagree that the Psych degree will be useless. I know this probably sounds cliched but study should be for the sake of gaining knowledge as much as it is for gaining a paycheck.

If anything the degree in psych could give you additional viewpoints and knowledge and make you more of a thinker. George Soros took Philosophy (very little to do with finance) and look at what he managed to achieve in the financial world.

So if you have the luxury of extra time and cash and the dedication to match, then I say go ahead and do the double degree. ONLY if its practical in your situation I must stress.

As for juggling studies and ECAs, then its all up to you. Take your past as a gauge on how well you can balance. My sister's been involved in CCAs all her life. In uni she was taking a double degree and involved in no less than 3 clubs and still she managed to grad magna cum laude.

I also know of alot of other straight A students who take up a whole of bunch of CCAs and outside activities. Don't ask me how they do it cuz I'm not sure myself.

Just my two cents.

Yes that is if you want to discuss things very realistically. However, the reason I'm beginning to consider UB's degrees over UOL's degrees is because of the diversity in their curriculum. UOL's modules (even the free modules) are ALL about finance, business etc.

The thing is that I also have an immense interest in psychology and human behaviour.

why are you so quick to assume he is interested in finance/accounting?

Yes I'd be more into the business part rather than be all focused on finance.

Yes that is exactly what I was looking for in a university education: diversity and a wholesome development, as opposed to just getting the paper and getting a job. Thanks for the encouragement!

I only agree with some of your points.

If you have the Psych knowledge but did not apply it, you will only left with the cert but not knowledge because you have forget about it. (I have alot of Certs but did not use & apply the knowledge end up I only have Certs but no knowledge).

TS only looking at Business related jobs which mean his empolyer only use Business degree & not his Psych degree because his Psych degree is not in use & not really value added until the company willing to pay for his certs to add into his salay. (I have alot of Certs but it is not value added to the job even if the certs is interlink with the job I am applying which I cannot command for more $ as inform by my interviewer).

as I have pointed out earlier, psychology is very useful in many business-related jobs. thank goodness most employers in singapore are not as misinformed as you are.

1) From employer point of view for psychology, it is inter link but not related & will not pay the empolyee more $ for his requested salary.

Employer will treat this somethings like:

a) A Project Engineer have a BEng, PE Sg & BCSS but will not be paid more for his PE Sg & BCSS cert.

b) A Engineering Manager have a BEng & BBA but will not be paid for his BBA cert.

c) An Admin & HR Manager have an Accounting degree & CPA Sg but will not be paid for his CPA Sg.

2) Psychology is very useful in alot of jobs. But you mostly will use it for yourself & not really for your jobs because it is not related but interlink.

This is somethings like:

a) You are a Store Supervisor & your storemen do not wish to work overtime due to OT pay is low. You needs to 'think & react to motivate (Psychology is used)' your storemen to do OT. But you do not needs a Psychology cert to perform your job & will not be pay for Psychology cert.

3) I know what you mean but i prove to you psychology may not be needed for sale job however it is interlink but not related.

That Those who have learn marketing know that in term of psychology, we should 1st talk about how good our product is

a) Client want to buy the product at $500 but did not tell saleman price & directly ask Saleman.

Saleman A 1st talk about how good is their product & lastly price is $600.

Saleman B driectly tell client the product cost $450.

Both saleman service are good.

At the end, the client buy from Saleman B because of $.

As you can see that psychology is interlink with $ but is not related to the saleman because saleman did not apply psychology.

as I have pointed out earlier, psychology is very useful in many business-related jobs. thank goodness most employers in singapore are not as misinformed as you are.

such arguments make you a living proof as to why employers prefer to hire social science grads for certain jobs.
they are just too worried about getting people like you who fail to see the bigger picture.

I understand from your point of view but different people have different point of view & there is no right & wrong.

The main thing is what role (Employer, Interviewer, Interviewee) are you looking from the point of view.

This is happening in Sg & my arguments is the fact where I personal exp it.

But do you agree my arguments & which arguments you do not agree with?

i'm in the BA Comms program, and it's 50/50 for girl/guy demographics. almost 100% local in the course. and because of it's relatively low O levels entry requirements, you may see 17 year old girls as your classmates.

but just one word of advice. this is a US based system and not distance learning like what alot of people here believe. the UB system is way different compared to UOL/RMIT offerings.

in short, dont expect a slack time at UB, it is really hectic studying here!

Wow, thats great to hear! It'd be strange for me to see such young people around me taking the same course..

As for me I scored 9 points (L1R5 before bonus) for my O levels a few years back and I kinda flopped in Poly due to laziness and wrong choice of course..

So to ask, judging from those who are taking the double degree programme at UB, is 9 points enough to secure a placing?

Also, what would be the average score people enter UB with?
