if u just unlock and lock without flashing anything nothing will happen, u can just use your phone as normal. of course your data will be wiped during both unlock and relock, so be careful.

however, do NOT lock your bl once u have flashed global rom on your unlocked china rn8. this will hard brick your phone, and mi sg will very likely refuse repairs for non local sets.

Kinda makes it redundant to flash since some apps require a locked bootloader phone.

the point of flashing global rom is to get google apps preinstalled for basic functionality we take for granted, like contact sync or even notifications arriving on time, rather than having to install it yourself on the china rom. if not using banking apps it's a non issue, but if you are, you can consider simply sideloading google apps if you are running china rom with locked bl, or even flashing magisk to pass safetynet with unlocked bl.

Hi I am very keen to get the Note 8 (with playstore installed by seller) but I have never get a China ROM phone and have no confident in doing the Flashing. So if I contd to use the China ROM in Singapore, will it be very different with Global ROM? Can I still use Whatapp, FB, Google Map, Paylah, DBS ibanking, gaming apps in playstore etc?

Another question : Can I transfer all the information and apps from note 7 (Global ROM) to Note 8 (China ROM)

I just bought a Redmi Note 8 (non-pro) and may need to flash Official Global ROM when it becomes available.

1. May I know if flashed global rom will get OTA updates just like a global version bought phone or do I have to re-flash whenever new version global rom is released?

2. Any potential negative effects after unlocking bootloader and flashing global rom?

Current china rom experiences:
- SingPass app: cannot use fingerprint to authentic (minor. just use password)
- Foodpanda app: "not available in your country error" (minor. workaround: set location to use GPS only, login, then switch back to location use high accuracy)
- Bank apps, Grab: OK
- Galaxy Wearable app: cannot launch

running on latest miui 11.0.5 after few month flashing global rom and the phone still running solid.battery life can last whole day without charging with running google map 8am to 5pm and tried everything works only for Gapps and this phone no NFC so no comment

No need to pay someone to install Gapps. It literally takes 5 minutes to do it yourself even for non-chinese. just google and watch 1 or 2 youtube videos. follow very simple instructions and done. Whatsapp, FB, Google Map, Paylah, DBS ibanking all work in rn8 china rom confirmed. Don't know about games.
I've used mi mover to transfer from rn4 global rom to rn8 china rom. most things were moved but not all (for eg desktop), maybe due to difference in miui or rom version. Have to check through all settings manually.

I still dont have confidence to flash yet. rn8 china rom works fine with Gapps sideloaded so far, except for just those few minor quirks I mentioned earlier. There will still be a tiny bit of chinese words buried in the system but no big deal. So flashing is nice but not essential I feel.

flash global on china set is fine so long as u keep bootloader unlocked. if u not careful and let miflash select "clean all and lock" (ie. lock bl) it will hard brick, but if u follow the guide as in the first post of this thread and remember to select "save user data" (if u want to keep ur personal files) or "clean all" there shouldn't be a problem.
i think singpass should be no issue. even if have, can flash magisk.

Been using mostly Global ROM since Note 3 era until recently ended up with a CN K20 Pro. So far no issue with all apps on the K20 including Singpass and all banking apps, fingerprint, Gapp all working. Tempted to flash Global, but don't see much advantage and might lose NFC capability.

Anyone tried to flash twrp on the Redmi Note 8 Pro global rom? Which method did you use?

Mine is a China rom set & I flash it to global rom after unlocking the bootloader. Although it is not rooted, Google Pay is not working because it is able to detect that the bootloader is unlock. Need to flash twrp & Magisk to hide the bootloader unlock & root status to make Google Pay work.

I have an old Samsung phone, bootloader is unlocked & phone is rooted & yet Google Pay is working because Magisk is hiding the phone root status.

correct. however, if u r willing to do more work, it is possible to get gpay running on unlocked bl phones. this includes flashing additional stuff like magisk (which will also work on custom roms), but it is worth it.

i will not recommend doing this on the rn8p though, there has been reports of phones getting bricked from otherwise simple modifications. if u buy other snapdragon phones flashing magisk should be easy and fairly straightforward, but on the mediatek powered rn8p it is better to wait for development to sort out these issues.

Yes, im new to flashing but im running a pie pixel experience on poco f1 now. I believe i rooted the phone using magisk too.

So may i noe how i can get google pay to work with magisk?

usually flashing magisk then hiding magisk from gpay with the magisk manager app are the only necessary steps to pass safetynet and gpay can be used straight away no problem. however, if ur phone still cannot pass safetynet with magisk then u need to install a separate module inside the manager called "MagiskHide Props Config", then follow the instructions to spoof ur device signature to the officially recognised one. this is what i had to do for my newer mix 2s, and gpay works well.

generally mediatek phones do not get much attention from developers since in the past they were slow, power inefficient and developer unfriendly, and as such were generally reserved for no frills phones. now with the n8p, the first two issues have been resolved, but it appears the mediatek chip is still developer unfriendly, as people have bricked their n8p by trying to mod it, and as of now there is no way to recover it, unlike xm snapdragon phones which can use emergency download mode. so for now, no it's not safe to flash stuff on the n8p.
