FYI MIUI 10 beta/development is available now. I am using xiaomi eu version of MIUI 10 beta, so far so good.

I have an ipad air 2 for years but planning to give it to my dad for him to watch news and surf facebook due to its large size.

I got an amazon fire HD8 for cheap after glowing recommendations from my friend. It can run both amazon store and google play (after installing some drivers) but it turns out it is way too slow. Sometimes I can tap and wait for 0.5s before it responds, and the screen can be quite jerky. I lowered my expectations, but didn't expect it to be so slow.

How about mi pad 4? Thinking of getting one cuz it looks so much like ipad mini. I like android for its customisation and micro sd card expansion, but hope it will be as snappy as a 4-5 year old ipad.

snappy after 4 - 5 years?
probably not. i guess apps will get larger in size over time and with newer apps, their processing appetite will be larger.
but to serve as a media player and browser shouldn't be too much of an issue.

then again, there is also possibility of flashing the device to lighter roms. like LOS
and maybe have the snappiness back.

No need install other custom ROM for Play Store. Just install it directly on China ROM will do. Everything is working fine.

Thanks. Saw it from youtube too. Initially, I tot there is EU or global available but after some search, it seems that there isn't any. Probably will unlock the bootloader using Mi tool. For those who had unlocked, don't lock it back as it will brick the mipad. Saw it from xda yesterday.

once unlocked, gotta wait patiently for official global rom to come to flash.

think most ppl got it from there where there is $50 qoo10 voucher over the last weekend. Price are below $199.

Install the google play store is straight forward no point paying $3.50 + you get a sealed set which is better.

Tempered glass is very much easier than those old times film protector.
Google play store just need some read up ,also not that difficult.

Reboot the tablet? So it totally can't detect the sim card? Either the sim card is too old or too new?

Factory reset it ,check apn all Liao but funny things is when on wifi will show starhub 4g the moment of wifi show no service ,really weird
