Review: Xiaomi Redmi - Mobile Phones - CNET Asia

The rear cover is removable, and you can also swap it out for a different color. Xiaomi will also be retailing a bunch of soft gel protective cases for just S$9, which add a different hue to the handset as well. I found the cases to be pretty well made despite its price, and this means you don't have to spend a bomb to accessorize.

Underneath the cover is where you'll find the removable 2,000mAh battery, and I'm told that you can also get an extra battery for just S$10, and in a different color, though no one (besides yourself) will ever see it.

Batteries selling at $10 each...
This is really a crowd puller!

Should I just bite the "millet" and give Xiaomi Redmi a try?

$169 is really not that expensive to try a novel brand of cell phone actually...

Those who want to buy mi phone can try out the miui by installing MI launcher on your Android phone by downloading the apps from the Google playstore.

It seems to be running a version of OS, called MIUI, which is Android based but I am not sure if it can be used with Google's Play Store and download and install the apps in Google Play store.

I read some reports that the Redmi that is launched in Singapore comes with Google Play Store instead of the "Hongmi Apps Store"

I am worried if the phone cannot use the same Android apps in Google Playstore and that would seriously restrict the amount of apps available to the phone if that is the case.

Some of Redmi specs on Xiaomi Singapore

OS: MIUI V5 system, support Android4.
CPU: MTK MT6589T, Quad-core 1.5GHz

RAM : 1GB
**Flash Memory: ROM 4GB
Max storage expansion: 32GB

DisplaySize: 4.7 inch display
Screen Material: IPS
Resolution: 1280x720

Video capture: 1080p HD video recording
720p (1280x720)Quasi-definition camera

Camera (back)8MP
Camera (front)1.3MP
Dual LED flash
Aperture: ƒ/2.2 aperture

Capacity: 2000mAh lithium-ion battery

This phone also supports 2 SIM cards. which is good news for those who have 2 numbers or use a separate SIM for data.

However this phone is a 3G only phone, so no 4G support. (but its $169..)

I hope it can support Google's Play Store, but Frankly even W/o Play Store support.

Just using this phone for MP3, Video Viewing on YT..etc, and Web Browsing alone, is very cheap already. Considering the screen is 4.7" and a respectable 1280x 720, HD Ready res.

While cheap Android phones like Samsung's Galaxy ACE series sport only smaller screens that is hard to surf the web or view videos on.

May consider this phone as my backup phone or just to surf web and view videos.. on WiFi etc.

I am sure this phone sure sold out in a lot of outlets when launched on Feb 27.

Yes it supports google playstore and all dl unlike China version.

And miui rom that Xiaomi is using is popular among the top 5 most used and popular rom in the world on Lifehacker survey! Few thousands voted for Miui haha. They are visually appealing and light on its feet while having lots of customization.

BTW rom is different from the launcher you dl. Launcher only visual improvements but rom consist of under the hood improvements.
