Hi guys, I have some questions, hope you guys can help me out.

1) Is the wifi strength of the Mi 4 routers are good?

2) Can the Mi 4 routers be set to use as access point?

Thanks in advance! :)

1. all wifi devices must adhere to standards, cannot be too high.

2. all wireless router can be use as access point if you bypass the routing function, i.e. do not connect to WAN port.

Hi guys, I am currently under 500mb plan pair with xiaomi 4A AC1200 router, living in standard 3 bedder. In certain part of my house eg master bathroom, the wifi is very weak and easily disconnected. Trying to connect wifi right in front of the router does give 300-400 plus download speed. Try connect lan cable to modem and I can get close to 500 download. Relocating router is not an option, would getting a better router help? I am also thinking of changing to 1gb plan, but ideally I dont really like overly strong wifi. Thanks

1. Is this a new or old 3 room? // New BTO has LAN point.

2. Between the router and MBR how many walls are between them?

Newer 3 bedder, but with thick ppvc wall. The ont is located in the db box area and cant be relocated, the worst reception is in the Mbr toilet which has 3 ppvc walls in between. Thanks

ironically your bathroom fits your requirement of not strong wifi

is your router placed in the centre of your flat?

I think I am happy with the connection in the living area, but the wifi is very weak at some dead end. Becoz my house is fully prefabricated, so the walls are quite thick, and thus causing the issue. I keep the router inside the DB box area because it is hidden. Perhaps what I want is for the wifi to travelled farther and distributed evenly. Understand that repeater can possible resolve the problem, but instead of repeater, would higher bandwidth helps? Or shld I use a stronger router?

Wifi signal issue has nothing to do with high Fiber plan (bandwidth).

- relocate the router will sure help your signal traveled farther
- Otherwise a repeater will also help to extend the signal farther.
- A stronger router may not help much if you place the router inside a DB box.

no, higher bandwidth will give worse result, should lower the speed instead. but the speed here refers to wifi, nothing to do with your broadband plan.

you can't use a stronger router too, it is illegal to have power higher than permitted.

but you can change to a better router, or move the router out of db.

you can also install a repeater if far end toilet is the only problem. repeater to be placed in between the router and your toilet -- half way in between, or slightly nearer to router.

if you go for repeater, you have to buy repeater with dualband. e.g tplink re220, configure it to high speed mode. i.e. use 5Ghz band to link to router and repeat using 2.4 GHz band.

yes, another ap is a better solution.

but you have to lay lan cable between the router and ap.

if the lan cable already there, it is a simple set up.

if no lan cable, you can consider using powerline adaptor to link up the router and ap.

the others have all given good advice.

i suggest you move the router out of the db/enclosure as a start, if possible, near the centre of the house. measure the coverage first, then plan the next move.

Sorry for off topic.

Now I using Asus RTN56U as AP and I can get max 100mbps download even very closed to the AP. I understand that Xiaomi 4A has gigabits LAN and WAN ports, and RTN56U has speed up to 300mbps. But i am not sure if the LAN cable connecting Xiaomi to ASUS is Cat5e coz it is concealled behind walls. Any clues?

what are you using to test? test client also affects results.
verified it is using N-speeds?

quick and dirty test, using wired clients, not wireless clients:

connect computer on one end
connect known gigabit capable device on the other end. can be gigabit switch, router etc.
ensure the patch cables are cat5e or better

connect both devices. ensure computer can see the other device
assuming windows, in adapter settings, force it to 1Gbps speed.
if connection maintains, highly likely it is cat5e or better (cat 5 *may* be able to maintain 1Gbps with short cable length)

if using a switch, if the indicator shows 1Gbps link speed, most likely it is cat5e or better

or, remove the jack face plate. there is usually some slack. if you are lucky, that cable length will have have the markings to show the cable rating

edit: RT-N56U has gigabit ports. the 300Mbps is the wireless speed rating: https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTN56U/specifications/
