Revhappy, another way to look at this is that you started with S$87,000 of net worth 10 years ago, saved a total of $642,000 (averaging $64,200 per year, or $5,350 per month) over the next 10 years, and ended up with a net worth of S$966,000 at year end 2019. Or, in other words, savings matters.

If you run the numbers "naively" (start with S$87,000, add exactly $64,200 every year at the end of the year, compound annually) then you're averaging the equivalent of about 5.3%-5.4% interest per year (nominal basis).

Thanks, appreciate it! I didnt know it was 5.3-5.4% per year. Considering how badly I have jumped in and out of allocations. I hope going forward, I can stick to a plan.

Time to update networth growth. I was eager more than ever, to check the hit from the market turmoil.

Total networth: 961k(down 5k YTD, excluding salary savings down 17k)
YTD networth growth: -0.56%
YTD investment growth: -1.75%

Sad to say, i started very late.. almost 40 and only just started trading.

Cash have about 300k and CPF OA about 200k. Know it's not much and hope it's not too late with stocks/investment. Hope i can grow my money instead of it just sitting idle.

On a side note, my dad passed away several years ago, i remember him briefly mentioning many years back he has some stock holdings. Are they any bodies i can check with to see if he's still holding onto any stocks? I have checked with SGX, seems like no securities in his CDP account, but what about other custodian accounts? What happens to those stock if it's left idle when someone passes away?

Thanks!

It's never too late and your decision to start investing probably come at the right time when market is having a correction

Best bet is to go through any statements your father might have to see where he could have parked his shares

Kudos for updating when the markets are all red.

For me, between 1 Feb and 1 Mar (ok today not yet but it's the weekend anyway), my stock portfolio went down by 7.67%. Still, it remains higher than it was on 1 Dec 2019, and actually higher than at any time before that, because 2019 was a great run with 11 of 12 months ending up. Jan 2020 was also hugely up.

Of course, the full impact of the virus remains to be seen, and if Mar 2020 ends with another 7.67% drop, then my portfolio's value will have dropped to below 1 Dec 2019's value, but still above 1 Nov 2019's.

I am mentally prepping myself for a full year 40% drop. Certainly I hope that this does not happen.

My numbers are just one case, but it shows that those forever on the sidelines waiting for the big crash before they jump in (as if they will dare to at that time) are missing out on the gains while they spectate.

Between 1 feb and 1 mar by portfolio is down 12%....

Trying to think about how to make use of this opportunity....

I just tally my networth ..-0.96% for month of Feb but could be +ve if I adjust the forex as most of my asset is in USD. I am still using 1:1.35 rate for my spreadsheet
Investment portfolio lost in Feb is -6%
Great thing I received almost 40k of income and bonus in Feb to offset my investment paper loss.. It is going to be some rough months ahead as my portfolio is swinging almost 60K in one month. If Coronavirus crisis continue to drag another few more month, I am expecting 30-40% drop in my investment portfolio

I am just projecting worst case scenario like another 2008 and prepare for the worst.. If nothing happen, then I will just continue collecting my dividend

Got into the same 2008's shoe, a sudden kill which we can't even do a projecting like now. Impressive setup :)

For some reason its playing out different in SG market... STI ETF still above $3... SG investors, nobody panicking, so nothing much to buy in SGX? From what I see, all the REITS are charging up today.

The opportunities seem to be overseas where blue chip dividend yields are going up, which is why I'm focusing more on WQDV , VHYD , and high dividend markets like FTSE100 while waiting for STI ETF to go under $3.

i'm a bit tempted by DBS price, might just queue for it...

The dividend yield of STI is so high and valuations are so low. In this low rate world I guess that will keep STI up?
