My networth increases or decreases by around 80k for every 10 cents movement in SCI, an SGX stock. Never gone anywhere near US market. In the past 30 minutes, my networth went up by 88k or 800k in past 2 months.

That is 4m in 1 stock? How big is your total portfolio?

I also started my investment journey 14+ years ago by being conservative and risk adverse, afraid of losing money. But after I gotten my house 7+ years ago, I started to view investment differently. I was financially stable, frugal and my house, wife, kid can easily survive on my salary so I become more and more comfortable taking on more risk. As my portfolio size increase, the more i realise its actually just a figure which doesn't affect how I live my life. So I have become emotionally insensitive to the market ups and downs. I have already gone through 2 periods of huge drawdown during 2020 and 2022, still surviving.

IIRC your portfolio got huge concentration in stocks like AMD right? The drawdowns must be pretty massive if thats the case, really respect investors who hold a decent sized portfolio thats so concentrated, I would never be able to sleep well at night.

LOL... I started my investment 30 years ago with reckless penny stocks on clob, then S-chip, then dotcom ..everything I touch wipe me out.. It seems that i have an investment DNA that is doomed to fail.. Now that I have become so conservative in my investment that I think inflation will wipe me out as well..

Yes, my portfolio is highly concentrated. I learn from buffett, you don't need diversification if you know what you are doing. At the end of the day it's just a figure, never going to use it until the day I retire anyway so just chill for now.

30 years is a really long time, you started investing before working?

Buffett learned from Andrew Carnegie.

"The way to become rich is to put all your eggs in one basket and then watch that basket."

Great strategy if you have the stomach for risk and the skills/time to watch the basket closely.

That is one way of becoming rich. As the books Millionaire Next Door and The Next Millionaire Next Door shows, stock market is not the most common way of becoming a millionaire.

As I am fortunate enough to be in the >10k tax bracket, my path is simpler -10% yearly increase in networth (investment+salary) means my networth will double in 8 years, that's comfortable enough for me. Others may think 10 years is too long and want to become overnight crypto millionaire, so YMMV.

Investing in individual companies is very different from index investing. You need to watch them carefully and exit even at a loss if something is not going right with the company. Adam Khoo advocate choosing just 10 companies from different industry instead of the whole S&P500 and it seem to make a lot of sense if you really put effort in monitoring these 10 companies.

The problem with most people I know is that they only work to earn money then put these money into FD or worse just ordinary bank account. No matter how I try to explain dollar cost averaging or economy concepts, they just find it hard to believe.

Of course there are many ways to get rich, investing is just one way. Carnegie’s point was that most people never become rich because they are not focused, they have not gone all in on becoming the best in their craft, in a capitalist society the best performers get nearly all the rewards, the rest get scraps, there is great inequality.

Buffett has made this point several times as well, his advice to young people is to invest in themselves and try to become the best in their field.

A focused portfolio can be very risky and time consuming, but there is no payoff without hard work, just like everything else in life.

Sounds like my wife… but I’m ok with that cos I think being able to sleep soundly at night is more important. Anyway her day job pays well so money is not a concern for her. To each his own I guess…

Is this net worth thread just regarding stocks (as that's what been primarily discussed so far)..

If only count stocks, bonds and other equity derivatives, my net worth is probably around 1.3 mil. (Thank you GeForce).

If it's the whole shebang (property, cpf, cash, etc), my Google sheets told me my net worth is about 1.7 ish mil...

Doesn't change me much as a person. I'm still stingy for most things in life... 😆

It's supposed to be a whole networth thread, it's right to include everything IMO. My networth is about 2.65m at the moment. Yes, it's just a number which doesn't change my life at the moment but it definitely will play a part in when you decide to retire or pursue something else later in life.

Do you include your primary residence in that calculation?
