There is coating and sacrificial anodes. But rust spotting is inevitable.

Rust on a rifle exterior is fine, even expected under combat conditions. Inside though, you can’t have that because rust changes the dimensions of parts that operate at tight tolerances.

Ditto for a ship. If you can’t maintain everything, maintain the parts that matter the most. Rust spotting on a hull is generally retarded because the sacrificial anodes massively slow progression. Rust on key mechanical components on the other hand needs rectification.

militaries don’t generally subscribe to civilian regulations. Did you know a lot of our NSMen have kit plated with Cadmium? and plenty of asbestos bearing gloves are probably still in service.

The best **** for the job often carries tradeoffs.

Not anymore bro. Current issue kit most certainly does not contain Cd plating. However, AI doesn’t understand timelines.

Maybe ask it in a historical context spanning the turn of the century. Elder NSMen with the old model SBOs will be familiar with the olive fasteners and blue rust.

I ended my service only 8 years ago, and my batch still used those old model SBOs. Ditto those asbestos gloves.

Although it looks like rust, the brown spots you see on the ship is actually not rust.

First of all, the brown spots are high up above the waterline.

The part of ships near the waterline is the part that gets repeatedly exposed to seawater, air and sunlight (which acts as a catalyst) and will rust first.



The brown spots on the ship we see from the video are actually just water stains from rainwater.

Rain water collects dirt particles in the air as it falls down, plus will gather any dirt on a ship's decks.

When it is still raining, the water flow is fast, so it doesn't leave too much stains.

However, when the rain subsides, the remaining pooled rainwater will often drain/drip slowly around the edge of window sills and other ledges.

This is when the dirt particles and minerals trapped in the rainwater have time to attach to the walls/hulls without being washed off by fast flowing water.

We see the same types of water stains on building walls, fibreglass ships and even cars.

So, these stains can in fact be scrubbed off as they are not rust.

But best done while stationarily docked at port by shipyard crews. You get untrained RSAF personel to rappel down the sides of a heaving ship at sea to scrub the hull, later have to do rescue mission. Or if they kenna sucked and diced into bits by the propellers, captain dunno need to write how many reports.

have, but they operate in sea water which strips off the paint. and yes rifles do rust as well, that's why always ask you to oil the barrel so it won't rust.

and ships are mainly made of steel, not stainless steel. usually they visit a port at least once every 2 to 3 months, that's where the maintenance on the hull will be done. and even if the ship is in such state, it's still recoverable, they will grind away the rust then repaint the entire ship hull
