Hi,

thinking of getting the following and get from sim lim,

anyone can advise which shop offer the best deal

1. DiskStation DS420+
2. upgrade the ram from 2 to 6 by adding 4gb additional
3. what kind of SSD to add and how much can add ?

4. Toshiba 2 x 8TB N300

any thing wrong with the above ?

should i just get the DS and ram and HDD, SSD can upgrade later ?

or just get the DS and HDD and rest if future then buy ?

What are you trying to do with the NAS that requires SSD and ram upgrade?

thought it make the transfer faster and smoother

instead of just a backup,

i want to stream movies, photo and file throughout home network via phones and tablets and other desktops and regular backup of devices,

Still don't need all of these. The bottleneck afterall will be your network throughput + the CPU in the NAS

question current NAS put in computer room which have 1 net work cable connected

if i put it in living room and connect 2 ports to network switch, would the transfer speed in the network be faster ?

finally decided to get a new nas, ds420+ and 2x8 TB Toshiba N300 tomorrow

found that dynacore sell ds420+ cheapest but their HDD is not cheapest, will ask them if they can match trade pac price for toshiba n300 7200rpm or else might have to go to 2 different place to get the items

Yes you can use 2 network ports however if there is no MPIO configured it really doesn't do much for a home environment. You only have link aggregation and it doesnt give you 1 fat pipe for a single transfer if that's what you are expecting.

N300 8TB 3yr warranty with dynacore pricing is $325.

The 8TB with 5yr warranty enterprise MG toshiba HDD after qoo10 discount can easily go below $320. It comes with persistent write cache with power loss protection technology (even better for those who doesnt invest in a ups)

Sometimes really not sure what humans are thinking.

I think your assumption will cover majority of the use cases.

Still a local NAS can be useful even if the data is less than 2TB because the desire to have a local copy. Cloud providers can be down as well and you can also accidentally delete the files.

But all in all, I guess I do not need a 4 bay NAS since the local data will not exceed 4TB in the foreseeable future, probably a two bay DS220+ will do. But still I will explore other DIY option first.

If you wanna get a NAS, better to go for the 4 bays one. Gives you more flexibility.

I am thinking to buy theDS920+ after reading through this forum,

about the HDD,

as the data from my computer is 4.1 TB

i am thinking to get 2 x 6 TB and set up at SHR1 and then 1 x 8 TB as standalone,

then after it is all setup, I will transfer my files from computer to the 2x 6TB and then make a copy in the 8 TB, is it okay plan ? or i am missing something ?

or the 8TB should be an external one which i periodically power up and backup from my 2 x 6TB ?

You can't expect Tradepac tiny shop to stock everything listed. If you can wait, they will pull stock from other shops.

This has always been sim lim sq. “no stock’s price”. this has been going on for decades. If I’m not wrong this bad habit is even brought onto lazada and shopee platform now.
