Merlin himself said that there is a bottleneck. I personally tested myself and yes, I can't get full gigabit speeds using the built in speedtest

Thanks. Interesting to know that. What about the latest ARM Linux version from here?
https://www.speedtest.net/apps/clihttps://install.speedtest.net/app/cli/ookla-speedtest-1.2.0-linux-aarch64.tgz (aarch64 for RT-AX86U/88U/etc)

I was using the below version.
https://install.speedtest.net/app/cli/ookla-speedtest-1.2.0-linux-armhf.tgz (armhf for RT-AX56U/58U/82U/etc)

FYI, I had no issue getting full wired speed from Ookla SpeedTest last time when using Raspberry Pi 400 (with BCM2711 Quad Core Arm Cortex A72 CPU at 1.5GHz/1.8GHz) running OpenWRT. BCM4908 (Quad Core Arm Cortex A53 CPU at 1.8GHz) will of course be much slower compared to BCM2711 but I was hopping it was just good enough.

BTW, the reason I did not go with RT-AX86U but RT-AX82U in the end of 2020 was that I already set my eye on OpenWRT/pfSense using Intel mini PC at that time, even though I know RT-AX86U would win over RT-AX82U by quite a bit in terms of CPU power and even wireless performance.

Common Asus AX router now (not counting Zenwifi mesh solution), local pricing info is from Challenger and it is just for reference.

Currently due to componenet shortage and the Asus pricing strategy, it is actually difficult to find good deals of Asus router most of the time. The exception is probably GT-AX6000 from M1 or Carousell.

1. Highest end -- best buy is GT-AX6000 from Carousell; or from M1

RT-AX89X (S$699), GT-AX11000 (S$699) and GT-AX6000 (S$659 retail, but much lower from Carousell from M1 users, at around S$450 to S$480)

2. High end -- best buy is still RT-AX86U from Singtel. You can also get it from Carousell at about S$400 (a few listings only). For M1 users, no point to get RT-AX88U since GT-AX6000 is priced the same but much better.

RT-AX88U (S$499), RT-AX86U (only from Singtel, or from Carousell at around S$400) and RT-AX86S (S$369, not worth buying at all)

3. Mid end -- the price of RT-AX82U and TUF AX5400 is simply too high to justify
RT-AX82U (S$329 for both normal and Gundam edition), TUG AX5400 (S$329)

4. Mid-low end -- both RT-AX58U and TUF AX3000 are worth buying
RT-AX58U (S$235) and TUF AX3000 (S$259)

5. Low end -- RT-AX56U is worth buying as router, RT-AX55 is worth buying as a mesh node
RT-AX55 (S$110 to S$120 from Carousell), RT-AX56U (S$ 179) and RT-AX53U (S$129)

Just finised setting up my wife's iPhone 14 (512GB purple non-pro version) and it is the first Wifi 6 enabled mobile phone in the family. Wifi speed is rather disappointing though, tested at close range with my Asus RT-AX82U router. Probably I will test at a different time to see if it can hit above 800Mbps. I believe it does not support 160MHz (2x2 AX 80MHz at 5GHz band, max PHY speed 1201Mbps) so the speed witll be lower than my Acer laptop with Intel AX201 adapter (2x2 AX 160MHz at 5GHz band, max PHY speed 2402Mbps) .

Edit: retest to get a bit better results but not yet crossed the 800Mbps barrier

What’s the max real world Wi-Fi speed you can reach on your Acer laptop with 2402 Mbps PHY speed? I suppose your fibre broadband is 1 Gbps?

At good times it hits 900Mbps+. At normal times, at least 800Mbps+, at close range to the Asus RT-AX82U router.

It is said that for RT-AX86U/88U, you can get consistent 900Mbps+.

For those with Dual 1Gbps plan and Dual WAN Load Balancing, wireless speed of RT-AX86U should hit above 1Gbps, say 1.25Gbps based on the results from Dong Knows. GT-AX6000 may even hit above 1.5Gbps.

RT-AX89X is for sure a top model from Asus and it has a faster CPU compated to GT-AX6000.

I am not so sure if DongKnows retested the RT-AX89X with the new FW version or not.

Best wifi 6 router list from DongKnows.
Some of the models are not available in Singapore but majorities are available in Singapore.

The very best Wi-Fi 6 routers: The shortlist
Synology RT6600ax: The best router for Gigabit Internet (up to Gig+ broadband)
Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Router: The best router for a sub-Gigabit Internet (and local network)
Asus GT-AX6000: The best router for entry-level Multi-Gig Internet — up to 2.5Gbps
Asus RT-AX89X: The best router for top-tier Multi-Gig Internet — up to (sort of) 10Gbps

Best high end router
Asus RT-AX86U
: That former best dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router
TP-Link Archer AX6000: A well-rounded Wi-Fi 6 router
Asus RT-AX88U: The much better clone of the Wi-Fi 5 version
Netgear RAX120: The best-looking Wi-Fi 6 router with awesome NAS performance

Best mid-range router
Asus TUF AX5400
: And an easy recommendation for gamers
Asus GS-AX5400: An excellent gaming router
Asus RT-AX82U: Possibly the coolest gaming router to date
Netgear Nighthawk RAX50: The just-right Wi-Fi 6 router

One of the best iPhone wireless result is from @kashix.

Device: iPhone 12 Pro Max
ISP: MyRepublic 1Gbps
Router: ASUS RT-AX86U

Note: at that time MyRepublic limited the upload speed of 1Gbps plan to 500Mbps.

The client plays a big part in the wireless speedtest. Apparently iPhone 14 non-Pro is not that good. Maybe the iPhone 14 Pro models can catch up with (or even beat) the older iPhone 12/13 Pro models.

My best wireless results: SingTel 1Gbps plan, Asus RT-AX82U router.

1) Client device: Huawei AX3 Pro (2*2 AX160MHz) in repeater mode, a Mac Mini M1 is connected to the LAN port of the Huawei.

2) Client device: Acer Windows 11 laptop with built-in Intel AX201 adapter.

3) Client device: Dell Core i7 9th gen laptop with Intel 9560 AC 2*2 160MHz adapter

Both the router and the wireless client are important.

Just using RT-AX86U (better, more consistent) or RT-AX82U with a good Wifi 6 client (2x2 AX 160MHz at 5GHz band) and it is easy to get >800Mbps at close range (eg: 1m to 3m). There are many other AX routers (2x2 AX 160MHz on the 5GHz band or better) can achieve this kind of speed, some of them are below S$200.

Good Wifi 5 router (eg: RT-AC86U) and Wifi 5 clients (2x2 AC 80MHz or better at 5GHz band) can usually get above 600Mbps.

Lower end AC router can probably only give you about 300-400Mbps speed.

What is your router and client used?

Of course bro, how fast you can get out of your 1gbps, depends on what router you use, you get a good one, much faster speed.

My mother is so used to my fast wifi speed at home, the moment she goes to her friends house, she came back and ask me how come the internet becomes so slow at her friends house. I told her, my router legendary AX86U leh, you compare with those trash from SingTel/StarHub bundled router meh? lol
