Does this mean that if I have a Ubiquiti Dream SE, as long as the ONR is set to bridge mode, I can use the Dream SE as a router? What type of WAN IP does it receive from the ONR? Is it a public IP address or a local IP address assigned by the ONR?

I'm still uncertain which telco I should choose. It seems MR is the only telco that is compatible with the Dream SE.

Yes your UDM SE will receive a public IPv4 address on the WAN if you connect it to the bridged port of the Singtel ZTE F8648P ONR.

But your information is not correct with regard to Starhub.
MR is using XGS-PON ONT for the 10Gbps plan.
Starhub -- you can choose to use ONT or ONR with the 5Gbps/10Gbps plan.

Reference
https://www.starhub.com/personal/store/broadband.html

1) Starhub 5Gbps at S$45 per month -- default is using Nokia all-in-one ONR with wireless AX6000 but you can go to the shop and request to change to ONT. I will recommend to go with this option (ONT) since you have UDM SE.

2) Starhub 5Gbps plan at S$55.30 per month -- using ONT + TP-Link EB810v

3) Starhub 10Gbps plan at S$69.95 per month -- using ONT + TP-Link EB810v

4) Starhub 10Gbps plan at S$59.05 per month -- using Nokia all-in-one ONR with wireless AX6000

Hi Shifus here

I am still on the ST 1+1 plan, and the contract is long over. My use case is very simple: I have one TV in the living room and one in the bedroom, both of which my wife and kid use to watch Netflix. I'm mostly on the computer gaming or watching YouTube/Netflix.

My setup:
ONR - Asus68,
1 port goes to an unmanaged bridge that my CCTV and two TVs are connected to (I have done up LAN points during reno); this Asus also act as AP in the living room.
1 port goes directly to my PC.
My room also has another LAN point connected to the bridge, and I use the mesh provided by Singtel to extend the Wi-Fi in my room.
If I have done it correctly, I should be using the 1Gbps alone on the PC, and the rest (CCTV/Wifi/TV) share the other 1Gbps.

I recently experienced some lag while watching streams on PC. I cannot tell for sure if it's my network or if it came from the source.

Given my scenario, is it advisable to go ST 5Gbps? Or would I have a significant experience change even if I upgrade? I definitely feel 10G for me is overkill. By the way, my running cables are all cat5e done up during reno, and I am unsure they can support higher speed or wifi7.

I don't intend to switch service providers for now for non-fibre-related reasons.

Thanks in advance!!

Actually should go for their 5Gbps plan. Actually Cat. 5e cable is not an issue as the cable is less than 50m long so can still support 10Gbps internet.

Yes, Option 2/3 will default to XGS-PON ONT.
2) Starhub 5Gbps plan at S$55.30 per month -- using ONT + TP-Link EB810v
3) Starhub 10Gbps plan at S$69.95 per month -- using ONT + TP-Link EB810v

For Option 1, you need to go to the shop and get it black and white that they will issue XGS-PON ONT and not ONR.

Starhub may take some time to fix the backend issues so you may get lower speed at peak time, especially for SH/MR 10Gbps plan. So it may be better to sign up for the 5Gbps plan as of now.

Ok Swee! for those TP-Link EB810v, once contract end, it will be ours no need to return to StarHub right?

Yes that is correct.
Hi, I'm new here and to Singapore. I've been following this thread. Super helpful .. Thanks to you all for the advice and shared experiences. The multigig thing is new to me.

@xiaofan
Thanks for all of your advice on routers and fibre plans.

Some things still confuse me. I'm a noob. If I sign up for SH, 5Gbps plan. Go to their store and request an ONT. Choose the eb810v, but use it as just an AP + 2.5Gbe switch for my home office room (and using a separate router as my main router)... Is there still a security risk in using the SH provided eb810v within my home network/LAN environment?

Is there a way to switch off remote management (of eb810v) or is that a bad idea? Is there a way to hack the configuration to make it safer?

Its seems there is big difference between the retail be800 running at total throughout of be19000 and the eb810v at be22000. If I can get a be800 retail/local market version at a good discount on Carousel, is it the better option as my main router, the one the ONT will connect to?

Thanks for any advice

Much much less risk - the EB810v won't be internet-facing in that setup, your other router will be, so it won't be directly accessible from the internet.

No way to turn it off in its UI.

No more 1Gbps plan? SH website is now 2Gbps at $39 with that stupid linksys router. That 1+1 plan or single 2Gbps? They must well upgrade to 2.5Gbps plan right. 🫠

Seem like next year I need to call SH CSO for better deal without router and free for xx months.

It will be working as Access Point and no risk la. The remote access is to help ISP technical support do work when necessary. ISP will not dare to put users at risk. 5Gbps with ONT will cost more.

1) So you are going to use your own router and then use the EB810v after it as an AP, then it should be better,

2) No way to switch off the remote mamagement as far as I know.

3) Of course there is a difference since EB810v is a service provider model. If you can get TP-Link Archer BE800 at a good price, then of course it is a much better router. On the other hand, I doubt you can get a good price below S$550 since the price from Challenger is at S$809. Amazon US price is at about US$540. But I am not good at finding good deals myself so you may want to try.

4) On the other hand, TP-Link Archer BE805 can be much cheaper in Carousell. BNIB unit is at around S$400 (dumped by MyRepublic users). It is a concumer model. The main drawback is that it does not have 2.5G LAN ports. But you can get 2.5G switch with 10Gbe uplink at reasonable price as a work-around. Or maybe you already have or plann to buy a 10G switch.

Starhub XGS-PON ONT -- TP-Link Archer BE805 10G WAN port
TP-Link Archer BE805 10G LAN port -- 2.5G switch 10Gbe uplink
2.5G switch 2.5G copper ports -- your devices
