can i know why many of you sub to 10Gbps? what the reason, cause me want to sign up a new plan

access your NAS often?
download tons of stuff?
plan ppl at home that use of bandwidth?
not yet, but contemplating...
reason being is my SH plan (1+1) is already due for re-contract since late-June 2024...

i don't have NAS
i don't download tons of stuff
people at home don't use that much bandwidth

if i were to sub to 10Gbps, i just feel the satisfaction of reaching up to 10Gbps from the Speedtest results:s22::yawn::spin:

how much is it ah?
$45 with ONR. But I requested to change for ONT Tp-Link EB810v. Additional $15/mth.

So, $60/mth for 1st year. $100/mth for 2nd year.

Once you reached 18 month and 1 day can ask for early recon if price drop without router but just continue to pay the router money till finished.

You can still use wifi 6 computer to get 1600 mbps to go beyond 1Gbps speed. You also got Lots of TV contents for everyone at home. If got projector at home, can watch movies on the wall about 100" big screen. Very nice to watch Football matches too.

Can i check for the starhub 10Gbps plan with ONT, what is the connection type to the ONT? Is it SPF+ or will it be 10Gbps LAN port?

I currently have my own DIY device with OpnSense that i will upgrade to support 10Gbps.

10GBase-T copper for ST/SH/MR/SIMBA 10Gbps plan (and ST/SH 5Gbps plan), as well as normal VQ 3Gbps/5Gbps/10Gbps plan.

Only VQ has the option to go with Huawei XGS-PON ONU stick (S$99 top up) which works with routers with SFP+ like Ubiquiti UDM SE, for its 3Gbps/5Gbps/10Gbps plan.

Recently I have been reading some most useful posts on 10G Broadband in this forum and I wish to thank xianfan, Henry Ng and many others for their generous sharing from which I have learned much.

Two weeks ago I finally decided to take the plunge. I decided to subscribe to the My Republic 10Mbps Gamer Plan even though I am not a gamer at all.

The purpose of this post is to share my experience just in case it may be useful to some others on this forum.

On 24.07.2024 one Netlink technician came to my house, and he went to the Fibre Terminal Point in my Family Room on 2nd floor. He checked the quality of my incoming fibre. It ran some 60m from the manhole outside my gate and was laid some 13 years ago. He confirmed everything was OK. Two days later one My Republic technician turned up to deliver the NOKIA XS-240X-A ONT and the Asus ROG GT-BE25000. He set them up and then he used Speedtest app on his laptop to check the router speed. I saw the readings were 7810 Mbps download and 7468Mbps Upload (connecting speed of the router to My Republic server). That seems quite a bit below the theoretical 10G speed.

The new ASUS GT-BE25000 is situated in my Family Room on my 2nd floor and I am happy that it provides quite a decent wifi coverage to the entire 2nd floor now. Next to the router, my VIVO phone shows a very high Wifi readings of 1642 Mbps download / 1748 Mbps upload). Even at the furthest end from the router, (some 12 m away and through 3 concrete walls) inside my Master Bedroom toilet, the signals are good enough. I used my phone to run speedtest and the readings are 280 Mbps down/ 495 Mbps up.

The laptop I use is the Asus Zenbook UX481F which is placed inside my Games Room on the First floor and it is directly below the Family Room. Quite some years back, I had a Class 5 cable laid linking these two rooms. Hence I can now connect one end of this Class 5 cable to the Lan port of the new ASUS GT-BE25000 router and the other end to the Wan port of my old Asus RT-BE88U router to form a backhaul connection. The AiMesh feature of these two ASUS routers enables the creation of one flexible Wifi Mesh system for the entire house.

My laptop can connect to the new wifi system well and the speedtest app achieves 909 Mbps download and 914 Mbps upload. Yesterday I decided to order a UGREEN 2.5G USBC to Ethernet Adapter from HK and upon receipt, I hope by using it to Lan-connect the ASUS RT-BE88U router and my laptop will further improve the data transfer speed. Hmmm..... To further enjoy the full benefits of the new 10G Broadband, I may have to buy a new laptop with Thunderbolt or USB4. Any suggestions?

Not an expert in laptops but I just bought an Acer Swift Go 14 OLED with Intel Core Ultra 125H CPU, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD for my wife (less than S$1200) to replace her aging Acer Switft 3 late 2017 model (Intel Core i5-8250U CPU, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD, bought at around S$1000 in Dec 2017). The new Acer has two USB4/TB4 ports. I tested it with IOCrest USB4/TB4 to 10G NIC and it works fine.

You can get any laptop with Intel Gen 13/14 mobile CPU and they will have USB4/TB4 ports. It may be worth buying the new Core Ultra CPU based laptop as they also have WiFi 7 support. AMD laptops may not be compatible with TB4 (they have USB 4) and usually only comes with WiFi 6E.

BTW, even my late 2021 Acer Swift 3 laptop (Intel Core i5-1135G7 CPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB RAM, bought in early 2022 for about S$1200) has single USB4/TB4 port but somehow it cannot seem to sustain 10G iperf3 test. A bit strange. On the other hand, my mini PC with low end Intel N100 CPU and Intel 82599ES 10G NIC can sustain 10G iperf3 test. My Mac MIni M1 2020 model also works fine with the IOcrest USB4/TB4 to 10G NIC.

So probably the USB4/TB4 10G NIC has a bit more overhead and require higher end CPU than the 11th gen Core i5-1135G7 CPU. But this should not be an issue now that you are buying a new laptop.

Take note we do not play games and my budget is always around S$1000 to S$1200 for laptops -- usually thin and light type. I had bad experiences with Dell/HP/Asus laptops last time so now only buy Acer (it is also a bit cheaper).

@xiaofan , I will blacklist your posts for a week, in case my wife read this post of yours.

On 2nd thoughts, maybe Acer laptop is cheaper than luxury bags, so unblocked already :ROFLMAO:

Hi xiaofan, thank you very much for your very informative post. I will bear your points in mind when I hunt for my new laptop. My present Asus zenbook UX481F comes with two screens which I find very useful at times especially whenever I select and upload my photos to Google Photos.

Great to know that IOCrest USB4 TB4 ethernet adapter works with your AcerSwift Go 14 laptop. It must be very thrilling to see very high speed transfer rate on the test screen for 10G Lan.

BTW I have also just bought a Qnap NAS TS466C to play with so as to kill my boredom. I had just gone through a major cancer surgery in Jul and I do need something to help me get through my recovery period at home.

Is your wife old Acer laptop laggy?

I had the same Acer Swift 3 (2017) model just like your wife but it has been slow - like take 10 sec to open a folder. Even thou I have upgraded the ram to 16GB and a new 512GB SSD, reformat the laptop, I'm still facing the same issue..

Weird. I'll try again one last time before giving it up.

Similar situation - the black plastic rubber start peeling already..

Make sure you do not use 3rd party Antivirus app and just use Microsoft Windows built-in security tool (Windows Defender, etc).

Usually my first thing after getting the Windows laptop is to remove the 3rd party Antivirus program. Then reboot, then carry out Windows updates.

Make sure you have enough SSD storage left as well. But I think you have no issues with RAM and SSD in this case.

BTW, the only upgrade I did for the last was to upgrade the WiFi adapter to Intel AX200 back in 2020.
