Some people feel very comfortable as if staying at home, just walk in and will forget to lock the door from inside. I'm one of those :s13: and it will freak my hubs out. Always kena nagged for not locking the door from the inside. Also, coming from Singapore will make one start to take safety for granted. That's why need to go JB now and again for humble reminders. 😅
Next time I built a hotel no locks type. 😁 😁

Give it a few months, it'll blow over and no one will remember it anymore. Lol

Such is the nature of news these days.

Bottomline, nobody died = no need for authority interference = safe to proceed Lol
Cannot let it forgotten.
JB already so few good hotels choice, any good one must keep hold of them. (Near CIQ hotels not in my radar, maybe one day I need it)

A lighter roast or underextraction may increase "acidity " but yes adding milk is magic.

One thing I like about many japanese independent coffee shops is they usually try to provide alternate (arabica) beans apart from ( unlabelled ) house blends.

You can have your house blends in a hopper for convenient fast grinding, and a separate single dose grinder for occasional Arabica varietal orders. but mafan needs more time, needs to weigh before grind per shot, very taxing on barista competence, and can introduce more variability in cup. Even a small sandwich shop I went in Osaka offered 2 Arabica varietals, but their single dose grinder is manual hand grinding. shag.

Wow expert indeed !

Btw, I'm looking to buy a narrow sprout kettle for my drip coffee. Where is good to look for one in JB ? Is it any cheaper there ? No need expert level, just trying out only. Or just get anything from Shopee is good enough ? Anything I should look out for ?

There is a thread on the main edmw forum on coffee discussion at the moment and I'm now motivated to bring out my moka pot again to use. haha ! The moka pot was retired for a while ever since i had the nespresso.lol

When you say "strongest" you need to see what you mean exactly.

Caffeine levels ? Then Robusta in general have more caffeine than Arabica beans, and taste more "full bodied". Robusta flavors are more 1 dimensional, Arabica gives higher order notes. Liberica also very 1 dimensional..

Nespresso started a very confusing "Intensity" for their capsules but most of the time (the non decaff) capsules have some correlation to caffeine levels. ( which by inference should contain higher Robusta proportions )

filter cofee actually 2-3x stronger than espresso, because longer extraction time.
but those drinking kopitiam probably referring to more bitter, more aroma and fuller body (gao-ness) when they say they want strong coffee

my max is probably 2 filter coffee only within one hour, after that hand start trembling already, how to do latte art when trembling 😅

So if I like "gao" coffee but not necessarily high caffeine, what should I be looking out for ?

Sometimes I'll play around with different coffee powder, capsules etc, some will smell gao but does not taste gao at all. Some does not smell much but will taste damn gao. What gives ?

I also don't tend to like coffee that are too acidic either (except with condensed milk i.e. Viet or Nanyang style). If arabica beans, I will take it only without sugar and a bit of milk.

Not sure what my taste profile is. Lol

I have a Hario electric kettle, not sure if it fits the bill.

Moka pot is interesting. tiagong taste is halfway between a trip and espresso.

gao in kopitiam ?

U can ask for Kopi Gao - undiluted kopi with condensed milk
Or Kopi Tiloh - undiluted kopi
( they usually add water for the other variants )

For espressos, the " rough " guideline is try to consume ur beans within a month or max two of roast date, once a bean is grounded into powder try to make the drink within 6 minutes for max flavor. Diff people make their kopi differently , for me my espresso milk drinks I prefer a slight bit of acidity.

Capsule grinds store for damn long time, alot of delicious volatiles escaped from the grinds though trapped with the nitrogen but may not enter the drink, when the machine punctures the capsule, smells good, but drink might be thin. Also ( nespresso OL ) capsules contain very very little grind i think some are only ?5gm per capsule.

For espressos if u dun like the acidity either get a darker roast, or pull a longer shot for more " bitterness " or discard the first second of pull. Not sure if anyone does the later. . ( Alof of rare and expensive arabica varietals tend to be ligher roast though so the notes are better preserved, usually drip coffee better for them but YMMV )

For nespreso capsules u can refer to this :

It should be Oriental kopi which seems gao, smooth but no powder full caffeine.
Incidentally I found this new kopi stall coffee at S$1.20 over at kallang airport hawker centre coffee tastes as good as oriental kopi without the hefty price

S$1.20 = Rm3.94 a cup vs oriental Rm10.55

also found the clay fish hor fun good at S$10 for 1.5 pieces of clay fish with 3 big fresh prawns

Any similar thingy like tng go+ or Malaysia cash funds that sinkies can apply. Cos TNG go+ need to be Malaysian. Thinking of changing some rm when it head towards 3.57 again lol

Interestingly Malaysians can open sg banks online easily but sinkies can't open most Malaysian banks lol

What Food Can You Bring Into Singapore?

📌 Meat from MY is ❌ not allowed (all forms of food products containing meat, not in approved countries list yet).

📌 Eggs from MY (West) allowed since end 2022.

The Food Safety and Security Bill was introduced recently and will be debated in Parliament in Jan. This will give consumers greater flexibility on the food brought in for private consumption.

As the FSSB is not yet in force, the current rules brought in for private consumption will continue to apply.

Last time ~10 years ago, PITA to open MY bank account.

Now it's super easy to open MY bank account.

Cimb and Maybank in Sg can setup everything for you

Sg for foreigner to open bank account, need more than just application paperwork, same like Sg open Thai bank account, but Sg open MY bank account, only applications paperwork, no other supporting documents needed
