My laptop with a 7 year old processor couldn't even do more than 200mbps with a wired connection. Now that I come to think of it, these 5gbps/10gbps are really too much bandwidth for most people to make use of. I think I just need 1-2gbps, i will see whether 5gbps make a difference after I get my ONT.

By right 7 year old laptop should have either on-board gigabit Ethernet adapter, or you can get a USB 3 to gigabit Ethernet adapter. It should be okay to get >900 Mbps with the gigabit Ethernet adapter. In fact, you can also get USB 3 to 2.5G adapter and it may well work okay.

For wireless, then it may depend on the configuration. Sometimes you can upgrade the built-in AC WiFi 5 adapter to WiFi 6 adapter.

In my case, I upgraded the Intel AC7260 adpater (AC1200 rated) inside the Acer Swift 3 late 2017 model (Intel Core i5-8250U CPU) to an Intel AX200 chipset based WiFi 6 adapter from Comfast. The wireless speed greatly increased with the upgrade.

The laptop was purchased in Dec 2017 and used by my wife until late 2024 due to broken speakers and melting plastic stand. But it is actually working and I have upgraded it to lated Windows 11 24H2 version.

It is true that 1Gbps to 2Gbps wired speed are good enough for most of users. For wireless, if you can get consistent >500Mbps for a laptop, it is already pretty decent. For mobile phone, technically you need much less than that.

1) Example wired speed using the Acer Swift 3 late 2017 model (Intel Core i5-8250U CPU) and Ugreen USB 3.0 to 2.5G network adapter. It is slightly slower than the results from newer laptops (about 2.37Gbps) but still pretty decent at about 2.28Gbps.

Router --> Asus TUF-BE6500 (quad 2.5G ports, dual band BE6500).

2) Example wireless speed from the same 7-year+ old laptop with Intel AX200 WiFi 6 adapter upgrade.

4m distance from the Asus TUF-BE6500 router (dual band BE6500) on the 5GHz band.

As long as you go with the ONT option, then you should have no issues to use your own Asus router.

Take note Starhub 5Gbps offer at S$29.55 per month has two options. One with ONR + Nokia Beacon 2, one with ONT and no extra router. Make sure you go with the ONT option.

I have provided the links (ONR and ONT link) and comparisons here in the first page of Singapore ISP comparison thread.

For new signups, are there two appointment dates (NLT+Starhub) or just one? I remember selecting two dates when ordering online but in the order confirmation there’s only the later date (Starhub installation). Chat with SH CSO on Whatsapp, they also said they only see the SH appointment date on their end.
1. NLT Appointment for Fibre Activation
2. SH Appointment for Installation

Thanks really appreciate ur writeup. Any recommendation for routers with their ont. Usually get Asus routers, this time was also toying the idea of ubiquiti. What's ur suggestion since mostly will be on wifi except for a ps5.

It will depend on your budget.

Low budget --> get HB710 from Starhub at S$192.
Mid budget --> get EB810v from Starhub at S$360.

Low budget and want to use Asus --> get Asus TUF-BE6500 from Asus China (2.5Gbps capable, quad 2.5G ports).
Mid-budget and want to use Asus --> Asus ZenWiFi BT10 from Carousell (dumped by M1 users), probably at about S$400 to S$450 for single unit. Two units will be about S$800. Existing M1 users are able to get two units of Asus ZenWiFi BT10 at S$504 (PWP).

If you have higher budget, then of course you can get flagship Asus models like ROG GT-BE98 or Asus ZenWiFi BQ16.

Mine is installation date only also. I called and asked, CSO said my address don't need NLT check or whatever, can straight do installation. Am currently on SH 1GBps, signed as new sign up for 5GBps via call.

For the starhub EB810v, I bought from them. For the router warranty, do I need to register? Or if anything wrong with it, I just call Starhub up?

Since getting starhub fibre then get the HB710 from them, it's really good for the price. Get 2 units for mesh if you want better coverage, no need to get the EB810v since you got no need for wired connection like me.

I went with Alta Labs Route10, and turned my existing Asus GT-AX6000 into an access point. Downside is you need to buy additional SFP for the two 10Gbps ports.

IMO Ubiquiti have great switches and access points, but their routers are so-so for the price.

Just wondering what is this S$30.37 deal. Thanks. Any links to the deal?

The popular deal in this thread is the S$29.55 per month promotion for Starhub 5Gbps plan.

its for re-contracting special customers; same deal nokia ONR but with free additional 1x beacon (total: 2 instead of 1)

Think the S$30.37 deal is when you go to the Starhub store and wants to recontract the S$29.55 plan. They will give you this instead.

You can get usb 3 to 2.5G LAN adaptor or a usb 3 wifi 6/7 adaptor depend on OS like Windows 10
