whats the minimum u suggest? 2 tb?

The biggest amount one can afford to buy. I'm using MacBook Pro M1 Pro since 2021. 1TB internal storage. Wish to get the 2TB. Too ridiculous pricing.

Must have at least 50% of free space as buffer.

Files I work with are huge. Photos.

Once work done, I moved work files to NAS.

hmmm why is it about affordability? should be about use case also no?

You might be able to afford, but then you might not even use close to 10% of it. then a bit pointless right?

It is up to the individual to know what they need. And what they can afford.

yep. hence is not so much about affordability right?

affordability is more of the constraint.

but which capacity to buy is dependent on one own use case and the person will know best right?

256GB is nonsense.

512GB is barely scraping.

1TB is good starting point.

2TB is very comfortable.

4TB and 8TB is overkill, unless one works with terabytes of raw video files.

Can I ask why external storage is not an option? There are external SSDs that should be quick enough for things like photo editing right? Seems to make more sense from a cost perspective

personal preference.

I stopped carrying around my external HDD to backup my work everyday at work and home.

store current work files on internal storage and use cloud storage for past/completed works

Just to clarify, this characterisation is based on your preference right? Not in general?

cause I don’t see how 256gb is nonsense if someone just uses the Mac to surf the net and nothing else.

in my experience, it applies to both general and my personal preference.

Not everyone requires 512GB or more. In short, buyers should be clear about their needs. There are always alternative, cost-effective options available.

Paying extra $600 for 1TB due to future proofing and not even using 50% of it over the next couple of years.
Remember, you get something that suits your need, not what other recommend due to their usage.

Hmmm.

but again back to the scenario I have been talking about.

why is 256gb nonsense someone who just surfs the net and wouldn’t even have much if any things on their Mac?

 yeah. Makes no sense at all.

For someone who takes a lot photos/videos with their iPhone and edit with the native Photo app, 256GB is more than enough to last them couple years before upgrade.

Ya, I think it’s important for people to be aware that there are a lot of use cases than their own to suggest it’s nonsense to get something that’s not within their use case.

If it is just net surfing, i wouldn't even buy a mac. An iPad will be more than sufficient. Even a cheap $200+ android tablet will be ok. I use a mac because i want to be able to do real work and multimedia edit while enjoying the Apple ecosystem.

A mac mini is still convenient to use external storage as it is a desktop, but for those on macbooks and always on the go, carrying an external storage can be tedious.

I have a ipadpro and i wont use it for web surfing, only play games or video editing. The browsers operate in mobile mode, some website like google sheets or notion just cannot make it.

The thing is to go into credit card debt for something they rarely or dun use at all. Nowadays so easy to spend and spend with credits or bnpl. Haha.
