But his reciprocal also not very reciprocal. We charge him 0% but he charge us reciprocal of 10%? Makes no sense. So we have to raise to 10% to help him reach his goal of reciprocal.
He say gst 9 percent is consider tariff
So considering the way our government like to help singaporean
Very likely gst will raise further to 10 percent to be reciprocal and so that poor people will be helped more

The world is facing a recession very soon with every countries economy slowing down due to the tariff. Americans will be forced to spend less on china imported goods and pay more for 'USA" products.

We already tariff him, it's call 9% gst
Tariffs and sales taxes are not the same thing.
Tariffs target foreign imports, making them more expensive relative to locally produced goods. The idea is to give local producers an advantage by artificially raising prices on foreign goods.

Sales taxes applies on everything. It doesn't give local producers any advantage over foreigners. The purpose of sales taxes are simply to generate tax revenue and nothing more.

Our tariffs look like GST or VAT to me, similarly for the other 10% for many of the other countries.
But although USA don't have a nationwide GST or VAT, they have a state level sales tax. State sales tax + reciprocal 10% tariffs means that they are taxing our exports to them more than SG tax their exports to us.

See my reply above. Also, the USA charges sales taxes too. Sales taxes are not tariffs.

Please go and see how US is charging the tariffs lah.

Trump is charging 50% of what the countries are charging US with a floor of 10%.
What's your point?
Reciprocal means if Singapore retaliates, the 10% will go up the same amount. Its simple.

What could Vivian Balakrishnan have done to stop Donald trump's tariff on

So many things he could have done
There are only 2 things Singapore could have done to avoid getting tariffed...... (1) is.... get wiped off this world .
Cos he tariff imports from all countries in the world
(2) beat Canada to becoming the 51 state of USA

Not even lunch time and can see the tiong and/ or jiuhu supporters chiong in to stir and want SG to help them make noise liao.

Well, we have 9% GST on imports and 0% GST on exports and big duties on cars and cigarettes and alcohol, so how to complain a 10% export tariff?

And what exactly do we manufacture extensively here for export to USA that will impact us greatly?

Now more countries might want to set up companies here to "import" then "export" to USA.

And we would actually benefit in areas of jobs like accounting and audit and regulatory compliance.

Our government should re-consider the Major Exporter and other schemes to make sure such companies pay some taxes in Singapore.
Without COO USA not stupid.

Those Trump's tariffs will likely cause inflation in US.
you may have read some 'experts' say that.
But, it is actually not clear and remains to be seen.
Such 'experts' have an agenda to just somehow say everything Trump does is somehow bad.

In every crisis, there is an opportunity. Since we only kenna 10%, we can attract factories to setup and benefit from it. We can also assist businesses slammed with higher tariff to shift to locations with lower tariff.
