I tot 9% GST is to help the poor, but instead asking hawkers to foot the free meals ?

Reader J T D :

Agree with youLeong Mun Wai 梁文辉… the onus should be on the G to make or at the very least help out the hawkers.. after all, we are paying right left and centre for everything with our tax payers funds. It’s a lot of talk but no concrete decisive action taken. Ask the G with their fat wallets to ‘Pay It Forward ‘ by starting with themselves as exemplary leaders.

Seetoh and LMW do raise a valid point. Why are they charge cleaning fees?

The tenants side already provided receipt/evidence, so can the landlord provide their side of story/reasoning for fairness?

And why is the govt answering this?
By right, the Canopy Hawkers group and those greedy landlords, etc. should be the ones to be held accountable for this. How long are they going to erode our hawker culture by continuing being so greedy?

Finally replied liao, after the past few days of hoo-ha but once again never replied to the main point.

Once again, never directly provided the main clarifications on the main point(s) that people are seeking on.

Continued disagreement over principle

While the Canopy Hawkers Group’s explanation directly addressed the storage fee claims, it did not resolve the disagreement with Seetoh.

The operator drew a clear distinction between charging for permanent fixtures and charging for temporary deliveries, whereas Seetoh’s concern lay in the fact that the space — regardless of its purpose — was tied to a charge in the example he cited.

Similarly, on the free meal clause, the group and Minister Ong both highlighted the voluntary and unenforced nature of the scheme, while Seetoh argued that the very presence of such a clause created unnecessary pressure and potential for future enforcement.

This guy summarised quite well. Why private operators can profit off public property.

In November 2024, I pointed out that these fees at the SEHCs, such as table cleaning fees, dishwashing fees, S&CC fees and pest control fees, can add up to as much as the rent itself.

Another reason y our food so ex n kept rising?

For example, the hawkers at Bukit Canberra have been billed a $650 table cleaning fee. Why is such a high fee still being charged when customers have to clear their own tables?

Tis is most damning! Yes,y r they still being charged a table cleaning fee when tks to d great ex retired minister. We now clean it ourselves! For just wiping d table?
