Congrats to u

Singapore needs... The world needs more engineers.

Cheap ones though :)

Pls work harder, bettered, fasterer and cheaperest.

Engineering is bad, but banking in Singapore for most people isn't rosy at all.

I've already made my choice, if you read my previous post properly.

Guys, I have an engineering degree and have been working in research and development for more than 10 years before I left to join the commercial team doing business development...in my whole career, I work in electronics (during the boom in 2000) and medical/ life science (2005-2012).

To earn big pay, u have to be a top notch engineer. My ex boss, age 48, look after a team of 35 research engineers (from fresh engineers to principle engineers) and he drew a monthly package of $12,000 which I think is already extremely high. I have friends who join the oil and gas where at the age of 38, they drew a pay of $8,000 (with 6 month bonus). I work say this is quite attractive

My buddy got a first class honors in engineering before he switch on to a business masters. He is 36 years old more and he drew $10,000+ already...

If we compare apple to apple, I feel engineering won't have a big breakthrough in terms of wages but it can be stable. Unless you started a business doing engineering services and you are the boss else I believe average business grads earn more...of course we don't compare the worst business grads against the top engineers...

My friends and i always joke about:

1. Engineers design Ferrari but how many actually have a chance to own them

2. If you have a chance to take business class in a commercial plane, observe how many of them are previously engineers.

Yo, i agree with u, that is the whole point of this discussion. It's actually a well known fact, I dunno why would anyone who have worked long enough would want to dispute this, it's just like a general knowledge to me, just need to be objective. I'm from engineering background also, not saying engineering is no good, just the effort n $ invested have lower ROI than business/mgt/finance ppl, that's all.

What has the need for cheap engineers got to do with me?

Sorry ah, my line pays top dollar for performance; we don't go by who's cheaper.

Am I really being ridiculous?

I don't know if you are old enough ... but if you are ... you would remember the movie Full Monty. Go and watch the movie.

I was watching CNBC yesterday and listening to OBAMA's speech ... go and listen and pay attention.

During 08/09 financial crisis .... if you did pay attention ... go and think back what the street protest was about. Are those protesters being ridiculous? Did the Govs changed anything? Is it how the capitalist world works?

I believe you did not respond directly to my question.

My question is, are you doing anything at all to CHANGE your situation? Instead of complaining about your engineering job, are you scouting actively for jobs in the financial sector and submitting your CVs to them, since that is where you want to be?

Agree.

But top notch engineer's renumeration is no where near top notch bankers.

Even worse if you compare it by dollars/hrs effort put in.

Top notch engineers renumeration are also no where near doctors, accounts and lawyers.

However ... there are those that just will not make it to be bankers, doctors, accountants or lawyers.

But I do not agree on the stable part. Engineering is the most unstable.

It may be a well known fact to you ... but unknown to many.

It is not about me. My time is over.

I was slow to catch on.

I was slow to figure it out.

My much younger engineering colleagues (but still considered old) with top honours engineering degrees tried to jump back to the financial industry but to no avail.

I tried asking close friends in the financial industry if at my age ... is there a chance to jump to the financial industry ... and their sincere reply was .... it is too late for you.

Ok. So let me get this straight, the purpose of you telling us all this is to give some heads-up to the younger generation of engineers out there? That they should jump into the financial sector while they are still young? All for the sake of commanding a higher salary?

Something like that.

For younger generation engineers and for those making a decision whether to pick engineering, business or finance as degree.

It is not all about commanding higher salary. There are those whose passion is engineering. Then, follow your passion.

Then you better be amongst the best to scrape the 5 figure pay.

Good luck to you.

Saw on Facebook today, just for laugh.

There are 2 ways to commit suicide.
1. Pull a rope round yr neck
2. Wear a tie and join Engineering
