Howdy folks,
These past few years, Asus has typically released one major firmware update every year. In 2012 they introduced an update which added AiCloud, and they eventually implemented it across older routers that were powerful enough to support it. In 2013, they added TimeMachine, OpenVPN, and VPN client support.
2014 seems no different. Asus is currently finalizing various major changes to their Asuswrt firmware, which should be introduced in the next couple of months.
At this point, it is unsure which router model will get which new feature. Keep in mind that some of these features require more CPU power or memory than is available on older routers such as the RT-N16. I would expect most (if not all) of these features to be available on at least the newer dual core routers such as the RT-AC56U and RT-AC68U, in addition to their next flagship routers announced at CES and Computex.
Just a preview of some of these changes people should expect in the coming months:
- Whole new QoS engine (I tested it with speedtest.net + a concurrent torrent, and it worked beautifully, with a minimum of configuration required - my torrent dropped to next to 0 as the speedtest.net reported my full 30 Mbits link capability).
- Improved Networkmap
- Improved realtime traffic monitoring of your network clients
- Improved Parental Control settings (you will be able to control more than just the time at which they can access the Internet).
- New Internet security features, based on multiple technologies including DPI (this is what Asus called AiProtection at the recent Computex), bringing protection against port scanning, known malware menaces, etc...
There's currently no ETA from Asus beside "in the coming months", and I assume these features might still change before their release (which is why I won't go into further details at this point), but this will give you an idea of what to expect in the near future.
i would say wider coverage. if say u encounter low speed, increase to 200mW might help increase speed too, as the coverage is wider. for 2.4GHz, pls try change to other channel will help
Firstly, it's really depends on your budget.
1). ERL - You will need to use ERL-POE (Power over Ethernet) + power adaptor/injector to power the Unifi AP PRO (N mode only) (ceiling mount/wall mount) so LAN cabling is required (surface/concealed) depending on how many APs you want to deploy. Centralised software management for the Unifi AP PRO can be done via ERL-POE. ~ second most costly.
On top of it, you must be pretty knowledgeable in CLI in Linux/EdgeOS (EdgeOS is a fork and port of Vyatta 6.3) to configure the ERL-POE/Unifi AP PRO - DIY or get someone to do it ~ another cost.
Once you are able to get past the above, your Internet connection will rocks (best WAN-LAN routing performance. WiFi performance is subjective depending on how many APs are deployed)
2). ASUS RT-AC68U - most direct way to setup and providing WiFi and cost the least. (Second best WAN-LAN routing performance). Most users will be opting for this. IPv6 is working for SingTel/M1/StarHub, ViewQwest IPv6 compatibility testing is still in progress. (I'm involved) Dual WAN - failover works only on USB 3G/LTE modems but load balancing is out.
As for MR IPv6, it should be still in testing phase from last i heard from my sources (I'm not involved)
3). ERL + ASUS RT-AC68U (AP) ~ Second most users opt for this combo when they are on ViewQwest Fiber, Static IPv6 works, Dual WAN - failover/load balancing works
As usual, ERL needs in-depth CLI configuration.
4). ASUS RT-AC68U + Unifi AP PRO ~ worst combo among all, ASUS RT-AC68U LAN ports are not POE, you will need to get a separate POE device to power the Unifi AP PRO and LAN cabling works as well. Need a PC to centralized software management control too for the Unifi AP PRO ~ most costly IMHO

Unifi Pro have more feature, the software management control able to check all the devices connect to your network ( Unifi network) and also each devices connection history (connection date, duration, total download/upload) statistic most active AP, devices , limit the group SSID speed .etc
don't worry the POE , it will come with the power injector. but ceiling mount is a problem (an ugly internet cable running to ceiling if you can't hide it)
but Unifi Pro is wireless N only. Asus RT-AC68U is much powerful and Easy to use. it depend what you need.
Does unifi ap ac have web configurator? Or it depend mainly on cli and its management software to config its access point?
all the Unifi AP able config. by the Unifi controller software, you can google it for more detail...
we back to this tread, AC68U is much better for performance.
My AC68u in AP mode, test for the " wireless N", the AC68U is more range and speed performance.
Personally, even though I have the PCE-AC68, I prefer to use another router in media bridge mode. More flexibility in that you are not tied to one PC only and it works for up to 4 wired clients and also for devices that don't have PCIe slot (laptop, game console, etc). Pg 4 of this thread has one guy posting charts for AC66-AC66 and AC68-AC66 in bridge mode.which wireless adaptor do u guys recommend?

However over 5ghz wireless i'm getting 50mbps then slowly keep deteriorating till 1mbps during speedtest @ speedtest.net local server starhub.
I get better latency when beamforming is disabled

my conclusion, disable beamforming since I have wifi coverage everywhere in my home
