How many wireless ac devices can the AC88U support comfortably?

Hi all!
Been lurking on this thread and the AC5300 thread.
I know the advice given so far is to pick the AC88U for the 8 LAN ports and the AC5300 for the extra 5ghz band/smart connect if you have a lot of devices connecting wirelessly.
But may I ask what's considered "a lot"?
If limited to only wireless ac devices, how many would the AC88U be able to support comfortably before you would suggest looking at the AC5300 instead?

If it's for residential use, then you won't have any problem. Of cos if u place it in a restaurant, where hundreds of people are in it at one time, then there will be a problem.. im sure your household doesn't have that many devices.. :D

Thanks renfred89

LOL!
Thanks for clarifying!
I was stupidly thinking that the number was something like 7-8, it's reassuring to know I could never possibly go over the limit :D

Hi,

The AC88U supports Link Agreggation (AKA Port Teaming, etc) just on Ports 1 & 2 or it supports it also on any LAN ports it has?

Finally, does it works only with one device using that feature, or can I connect 2 or more devices to make use of that? (i.e. Let's say 2 NAS connected using link aggregation)

Thanks,

Ac88u can only support 1 set of link aggregation on the port 1 and 2 only for now..

5-8 will be for Internet.

If you choose singtel-others, port 1,2,3,5-8 are internet and port 4 singtel tv.

hmm need some help here... for some reason I'm unable to detect my wireless network from my RT-AC88U. This just happened since last night. Never had any issues with it until now.

Can anyone guide me as to how i can troubleshoot the problem? tried powering on/off and changing wireless settings but nothing seems to work. Fyi I have no problem connecting to the internet via wired connection. Thanks!

Have you tried to detect the wireless networks using more than 1 device? Can see your networks using apps like Wifi Overview 360?
If cannot see, try to do a factory reset and just setup the basic stuff like wireless security.
If all else fails, have to bring to Avertek for RMA.

hmm all my other devices are unable to detect the wireless network (except for my neighbor's). I'll try to do factory reset then, hopefully no need to do rma! Thanks.

have 2 RT-AC88U, one is connected to the other via media bridge mode, and the media bridge one keeps becoming "undiscoverable" via it's IP, i.e. cannot log into it's IP to get access to admin functions. items connected to the media bridge remains connected to the internet though. a reboot of the media bridge fixes this, but soon it will happen thereafter. why is this so?

at your media bridge, now you can manually set the IP address. I got into this too when i let the media bridge auto assign IP via DHCP.

PS: What is your highest linked speed of your bridge? :)

AC5300 router + AC88U bridge on MR 1Gbps Gamer Plan:

Bridge Performance (current official firmware):
Linked Speed = 1300Mbps (seem max here)
wired PC to the bridge: 700+Mbps down; 480+Mbps up (max on my MR)

Waiting for next firmware for improvement.

what 12 devices you using? are they 2.4Ghz only devices (aka older device); 5Ghz (but lower speed) and 5Ghz capable of high speed?

Going from my experience of using AC5300:
1. You can choose to turn off Smart Connect, and manually assign your devices to the 3 SSID bands: 2.4Ghz; 5Ghz-1 (lower frequency range); 5Ghz-2 (top speed).
2. You can also choose to turn on Smart Connect to let the AC5300 decide, but warning, the Smart Connect is still not that Smart. Also, you need to wait for next firmware release.
3. I don't see 1 LAN LED having a big issue. You can isolate the equipment 1 by 1 for troubleshooting (max 4). If you have only 1 desktop connected, then surely no issue. You can 'see' the connection details from the desktop OS.

AC88U is a dual band. So if you have a lot of 5Ghz devices, they share the same and only 5Ghz channel.

For me, i deploy AC5300 as main router (and AP), and AC88U as media bridge :)

ASUS RT-AC5300 + ASUS RT-AC88U Combo

900+Mbps up and down wired performance @ link rate 1733Mbps :D

No luck in @ theoretical max, guess it's possible to achieve 2133Mbps @ lab environment :( :o
