MKBHD has raised the Memory issue as well "His music app would close sometimes when he takes a picture with music in the background"

Artem Russakovskii:

"My Pixel 3 XL is awful at keeping apps in memory. I can cycle between 2 or 3 apps, and they'd keep dying and reloading.

Compared to other phones, especially ones with more RAM, which can easily keep apps properly running as you switch between them, the Pixel 3s are embarrassing."

His OP6 to compare

While I agree that more RAM means able to stretch more, I havent had time to watch the video you linked here yet.

The pictures doesnt really show a fair comparison?? With no detailed breakdown and full disclosure of apps he used and if any differences between what he did on both devices.

62 apps used memory in past 3hr vs 44 apps??

I’m not really a hardcore gamer. Just causal. So I prefer an all rounder phone. Am using note 9 and was a pixel 2xl user. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of pixel’s camera, but everything else just isn’t justifiable for the high price tag with many other competitors offering better hardwares recently.

While the other competitors are offering more capacity in hardware, too bad they fall back on software :s22:

Seems like Singtel stock getting lower. their Pixel 3 white OOS and Pixel 3 XL 128 White & Not Pink OOS

Sometimes I cant help but think all those videos are just in these for the money. Their ultimate aim is just to make videos on anything of interest to the public.

Seems like people are still buying regardless of whatever flaws they can try to nitpick. Says a lot about the real impact of those issues

the idea is basic functionality... we are talking about casual gaming on a flagship priced phone here... it should at least function like what majority flagship are performing.. not like need to monitor how many games or apps are using alot of RAM and we need to close them first to not have the reloading issue.

Actually whats the big deal with reloading:s11:

I dont game so im not sure what impact it has on games. But most of my daily usage apps reloads fast and im back on where i left it.

E.g. some of the more RAM consuming apps like facebook, twitter, instagram. Maybe use liao then go on do other things. During breaks then switch back to it, even if reload also fast as if clean launch what?

Other apps i use like google play music, google keep(or newly renamed keep notes), outlook, gmail, google drive, calculator, google calendar and all the other basic apps.

Do you have the adaptive battery setting disabled? That may be the difference.

If adaptive battery disabled solves the problem, then all those youtubers should go bang their heads on a wall. Its a feature. And if they are dumb enough to use it yet whine about the feature is really facepalm.. lol

Its like someone use battery saver or data saver mode on their phone then complain the phone dim brightness or gives delayed notifications :s22:

Yeah, got quite a few other flagship phones with 4GB RAM but don't have those issues also. Some also mentioned it could be over aggressive adaptive battery optimisation mode. Better when they turn it off. Still concerned about the display though on the small Pixel 3. Doesn't seem as bad as the Pixel 2XL, but it's really like lottery.

I think i have posted on the adaptive battery feature since the pixel 2/xl thread and that i disabled it. I would be surprized if there are still people who are unaware of what it might possibly be doing.

yea just trying to mean at least multi tasking should work like what is intended compared to other flagships.. no matter whether is for casual gamer, hardcore gamer or general user. there should not a restricted way of usage due to different habits of users.

Other flagships like? Would be nice if you could provide some examples and usage pattern or tests performed on those compared to pixel 2/xl or pixel3/xl so we can tell

his impression is that play a game half way if browse web = search guide/hints/hack on the game.

it IS causal gaming when u play a game and decided to take a break, browse forums, read news and watch some videos. :s22:

pretty sure many ppl does that. like that everyone is hardcore gamers liao.

anyway no point explaining further, have to test the actual phone and see how good the ram management is.

I think its also a question on how long have the user left the game in the background before returning to it. I dont game but maybe some of you guys who do could share with us what flagship or what phones allow you to leave the game in the background for X amount of time and still retains the memory when you return to it?

I tested my game with Xiaomi Pocophone F1, 6gb Ram variant.

However, is facing the same problem. Game will reload after a few apps switch.

The xiaomi pocophone f1 will probably be able to get away with it due to its low price tag. Need another flagship to compare. Anyway thanks for info.

Perhaps its just an android os thing and not necessarily with the pixel. Perhaps the memory consumption of games are not meant to be kept that long?

The scratching issue has been debunked. You can check out Erica Griffin's youtube video. It's still a bad design decision tho.

I think its a trade off.

No coating means pure glass which another group of users will complain fingerprint magnet, many stains.

I wonder what all those who complained of super shiny glass back being fingerprint magnets do to their phones. If add a case, then easily add a case to pixel 3/xl also solves it :s22:

How many people these days dont use phone with case and tgsp :s22:

Im probably the rare ones who never had a tgsp stuck on my pixel 2 xl since last year till now. Still 0 scratch and drops :D

o__o wasn't expecting small one to go out of stock at all. hahaha. normally people go for bigger screen. But I think most likely still can try luck on day one. some physical outlets might have stocks. it's just a matter of getting used to it ba. Big phone easier to type 2-handed. But small one easier to type one-handed, and easier to use swipe typing. But actually, you could just turn the notch off completely in developer settings. then it will look pretty much the same at the Pixel 3 2 xl. haha.

Corrected for you :s13:

Anyway this year the pixel 3 will gain more interest over the pixel 2 purely because it went from 5.0" to 5.5".

In 2018 5.0" is really rather small. But 5.5" is a good option for those who dont want to go beyond 6"

what screen protectors are you guys thinking of getting?

i'm considering AmFilm glass screen protector for pixel 3

Quite difficult to find proper glass screen protectors for both phones. The majority seems to be shipping quite late. The ones we see on Amazon now seems rather dubious, not sure if it will fit the phones properly.

In the end I bought the protector and case from caseology

https://www.caseologycases.com/collections/google-pixel-3

Too bad they'll only be shipping on 1st Nov.

My original pixel almost 2 years with no screen protector too.

Still scratchless and silky smooth after drops etc

I don't think its fair to say that the Android will require >4gb, just because >4gb is used on 6gb and 8gb devices. A well-designed OS will fully utilise all the memory available (remember how ppl complained the Windows 10 has low available memory, why do you want memory sitting there doing nothing?)

In my opinion, as Google controls both the software and hardware stack in the phone, they will definitely make sure that the OS runs properly on the hardware that is available. This is probably the same reason why Apple also went with 4gb in Xs and Xs Max.

The reason why the other manufacturers go with 6gb, 8gb and even more is because numbers and specifications sells in the Asian market. Moreover, being at the mercy of not being able to control the software aspect of their phones, they need to be prepared for the day when Google decides that Android requires >4gb to run.

Why I see u bashing the pixel phones in a pixel thread everyday?

I would share good things if it was available. Night sight in camera is still disabled. So one of the Pixel new primary feature is still disabled until further notice.

This why you see so little talk about it cause there is no way to enable it without Google flipping the switch on on their servers for it to allow the devices to use it.

Yes Google has such explicit control of Android devices.

There was a fiasco about it recently, until now we don’t turkey know how deep their control goes but being able to remotely control their customers battery setting is quite creepy.

They will try to make it run properly, but I won't be so sure it is a 'definite' just because its the same party doing the software and the hardware. Everyone makes mistakes, no matter their level of control or expertise on the thing they are working on.

Remember the pixel 2 xl when it update to android pie then got reports of a charging problem here and there? The 9.0 update happened in august and the fix only came in october. There was no hotfix, people had to wait for a security update, just as they are now waiting for the ram issue fix on pixel 3, an issue which google has not even begun to acknowledge publicly yet.

Thats an example of how someone somewhere at google 'didn't make sure' the OS could run properly, causing a existing feature to stop working properly.

OS these days are big and complicated with thousands of code here and there. Even if it's the OS's creators themselves doing changes or updates, they might be as prone to screw ups as any 3rd party doing a touchwiz or EMUI. The devs at google are only human, just like all others.

I think we can all agree that Google is one of the worst when it comes to QA. Every pixel released, there's a lot of issues being reported. And it's not just a simple issue, it's a deal breaker for most users.

Just hope that all of them can be fixed by software. Unlike for the previous cases where it's hardware.

I do agree with you on this aspect. In comparison, Apple seems to be better at QA and making sure iOS works across the supported range of devices. That being said, Apple also goofed up in some of their releases.

The point I'm trying to make is that 4gb and the notch (controversial? :s13:) is not the end of the world. We should look at the whole package rather than continue to bash on specific hardware design decisions.
