They wanted to retain the same raw grittiness of the original anime

That’s why they got YWP to direct.

Most of the martial arts moves are actual combat moves without using “cheat” techniques like

Dizzy editing or sudden camera cuts.

That’s why fans of the original anime series were worried the movie couldn’t bring out the raw feel at first.

But relieved when YWP did it.

Naernaxi would have nailed the character based on her ethnic looks alone

But if we take away that natural advantage,

I think Chen Lijun is a better fit

Because she also got theatric foundation in 越剧 mostly as pugilistic characters.

So she’s not those princessy look good cannot sweat cannot jump kind of modern actress.

You can see her training on the ground riding horse shooting arrows getting ready for the role in some videos.
