Advice on CIEM please

Hi all,

Im considering purchasing a CIEM soon but there are just too many models out there. I was hoping some of you elites here will take some time off your busy schedules to advice me.

Im currently using a Reshelled 535 with Silver Dragon cables. I honestly love the mids on the 535, however when i listen to metal songs or heavier rock everything becomes a mess and it is very disappointing for me. I think the 535s fair well in normal pop songs and electronic songs.

I have read up a bit on the current available CIEMs, however i believe my knowledge is very limited and i hope u guys would help me out

From what i read, it seems the Heir Audio 8.A would fit me and so would the Rooth Audio LS8/8+/10.

Currently i have only auditioned the LS8 as the 8+ and 10 were sent for repair. I find the 8 to be an improvement already and am actually quite stoked to try out the other two.

However one thing i cannot resolve with myself is spending 1.3k on this improvement which i think doesnt justify the price(im trying to convince myself it does).

I have heard the JH13 FQ is the reference for most ciems but i have not gotten the chance to try it and the fact that jaben upcharges for JH is actually putting me off.

Also i noticed that 1964 ears has really good offerings especially so with the price, however there does not seem to be any shops bringing in demo units and i do not really want to have any surprises.

Lastly, the price is the most important to me cos not working and still studying i hope to keep it at max 1300 but ill see how it goes. So i hope you guys could give me some advice on which Ciems is like a 535 evolved and able to handle most genres as i hop genres a lot.

On the side note, i have auditioned the Hidition NT6 and did not like it at all, so i guess balanced Ciems are not for me.

You mentioned you are studying, so I assume you are below 30s. I would suggest to get Universal IEM first, our ear-canals shape is still changing. For 1.3k SE846 is a huge jump from 535 and its bass is phenomenal, helps alot when playing rock and metal plus that interchangle nozzle.

Another one will be Fitear TG334, a little pricier but can be purchased about 1.3k too second-hand with few more months warranty. To me it is a more polished 846 with deeper (not necessarily louder) bass, great mids (leapfrog 535), haunting vocal and better textured treble though rolled-off just like the Shure.

Save your money from buyer remorse of getting CIEM, unless you have disposable income. You will be lucky to get just 50% of money you paid selling off the CIEM since the buyer has to reshelled it. And most people including me are afraid of buying CIEM second-hand because we cant test it properly with someone else mold.

Anyway, give them a try and always trust your ears

Bro/sis tip: connectIT is having SE846 promo at just $999. Checkout their FB page. Jaben does have demo for all Fitear and JH models. SE846 demos are everywhere.

E1 should have 1964 demo sets, but the last time I went there(4 weeks back), they were back at 1964 for some reasons, should be back now. PM E1 over at facebook to check.

AKG K3003 and IE800 are currrently the best Universal In-Ear Earphones that can stand toe to toe with CIEM. Give them a try.

On the subject of growing ear canals, i would advise you to wait till your're in your twenties before buying CIEM. Cause thats when your growth spurt slows down.

AND ears and of course ear-canals grow and change thru-out our lives thats why some elderly have big ears. During adulthood ear canals can change with a fluctuation in weight gain or loss. (sign! growing fatter every year, thats me.)

Other than that, CIEM should last you for many years, i will only start to worry if it still fits after 7-10 years, if it even lasts that long.

Does anyone know how a v8 sounds n whether it will be what I'm looking for? Lush mids good instrument separation and giant soundstage? Also which of the 1964 line would y'all recommend if the v8 is not the optimal one?

have you ever considered westone customs? they have lush and amazing mids.... not too sure how you can get very wide soundstage with lush mids though, usually they don't go together .

problem is there isn't anywhere to demo westone customs. leap of faith, and a pretty expensive one lol...

duno how the current es50 sounds. after testing all the current westone universals, guess aside from the w60, the rest are still a fair bit off the es5. w60 isn't better, but rather a different taste. w50 was quite horrible. impression was the similar to um50pro.... treble went holland. w60 brought back some treble and made the overall sig more balanced, though a thicker and fuller one than es5. es5 has better clarity and air.

do note that the Ws are still new. i jit tao wanna cry when i first collected my es5. the sound was just... horrible. but over several hundred hours i swear it's the sound that has changed and not my brain so pray tell... how the w60 will sound after burn in, or even the rest of the Ws and UMs.

Actually the v6 is within budget leh. At least for my current quote. Problem is I cannot try it. And E1 tells me when the demo sets come back price will increase

hmm you can try contacting fellow forumers with the es5 and see get a feel of the sound sig if possible..? (thats what i did before making a decision...)
alternatively, you can try the UM mentor... after a few tests with the mentor, i found it ** very ** similar to the es5's sound.

edit: if you are willing to consider universals, the w60 sounds quite promising as well.. go demo one after a week more.
