No reason for you to top up gas unless somewhere is leaking....or you're Robert.

No. You will know it when you feel aircon is no longer cold
Bro. Many things dont breakdown overnight. They slowly..bit by bit...decline in quality. We can't tell but the experts can tell. If they spotted anything and it is still a small issue...fix it. You want to fix a small problem or fix a big problem? If dont trust this mechanic then ask for second opinion. Aircon cold so i dont believe in topping up gas sounded quite stupid actually. Many things can continue to work properly even if it declines. When it really finally breakdown..it is due to you not taking care of it when it had little symptoms.

Top up can earn how much? Build relationships and you wont need to get conned.
If unnecessary top up is $90 and u unwittingly top up eg 10x , it's $900... With the unnecessary money u spent u could get a few more servicing. Anyway what relationship u need to build when there are plenty of honest contractors offering reasonable rates.
I am all for paying slightly higher rates if it's a good contractor but I think it's stupid to pay for unnecessary services i dun need

Top up 10 times is leakage. Your examples are no good. How do you find a honest technician when you dont trust the one you are dealing with? How do you know it is a good contractor? How do you know when a service is necessary? You sound like an aircon expert to me. Maybe you can resolve your own problem and wont even need a technician ever.

Just went to ITE for course on basic aircon maintenance.

The proper procedure is you set the aircon to lowest temperature (usually 16) and put a thermometer directly at the vent to see if the air coming out can make 16 degree. Not elsewhere, directly beneath the vent.

If cannot, then you try a normal cleaning.

Test again still cannot then something is possibly wrong with the gas.

Any sexpert?

Nope. Although compressors will lead gas gradually, never top up your gas unless your unit is very old, e.g. more than 5 yrs or which is checked and confirm by aircon technician to have low refrigerant gas.

Be very wary when your unit is still new, < 2 years and yet the aircon technician claims need to top up gas, which is usually carrot chopping time.

My Starmex > 4 yrs already still freezing cold and no need to top up gas at all.

Well, ts din say in his original post that the technician advised him to top up the gas. So I'm assuming he's just asking a general question or he's diy. If so, then one can only tell when aircon is no longer cold despite all the regular washing and maintenance

assuming its system 3, if not cold, test by turning on 1 unit. if air is cold, turn on 2nd unit concurrently. if cold, turn on 3rd unit concurrently.

if its not cold when the 3rd unit is on, possible that aircon gas is not enough. this is assuming all 3 units have been cleaned ie filter and evaporating coils are free from dust.

gas leak can occur over time due to wear and tear caused by lousier materials ie copper pipe and/or workmanship. dont bother to troubleshoot where the leak is since its very slow. better off change the whole system if its >5 years old.

otherwise is the thermostat of that unit going cranky. or worse, the compressor is faulty.
