All of these ratings/measurements are for the lowest fan speed/nite mode.
Even a $99 machine like the Sharp A28 would do nicely.

What you need to do is to look for something that'd do nicely in your intended place of operation at a specific ACH / Air Change Hour. Bedroom at night means you'd need at least 250 m3/hr airflow and at that airflow you'd need comfortably below 50dBA.

Living room day use - noise wise it'd be slightly less of an issue.

The Daikin machines are using electrostatic based filters. Not that they are not good, but I and I believe many others prefer HEPA. It's a very long story.

Thanks. However Sharp A28 has minimum noise level of 25dBA, that's quite a difference compared to 15dBA of Hitachi EP-A8000. I am not going to use it on the minimum settings in the living room, but as you said, during the day in living room the noise is not an issue. However at night in the bedroom noise can be an issue and I am afraid 10dBA is noticeable difference.

There is also Sharp A50E 16dBA or A60 (19dBA) but I believe Hitachi made in Japan is a superior choice here?

You are not right for current Japan models
I am owner of 2013 model Daikin TCK70P
It has semi HEPA filter + electrostatic
http://www.daikinaircon.com/ca/2013/merit/cleanair/hg/index.html?ID=ca_2013_merit_benri_hg_index
I measured output. It's comparable with my real HEPA Sharp A61/A51

Actually my comment is based more on the "issue" that for anything that's electrostatic based, the cleaning efficiency will drop after time and also faster than HEPA based.

I have used the 3M MPR2200 Elite Allergen pure electrostatic filter before in my Sharp KC-840 (DIY cut) and after the 7-8th week, there was a distinct drop in air quality, my wife and I can literally feel it coz we were sneezing occasionally. After changing the filter to a new Sharp HEPA, immediately on day 1 we literally could feel the difference. Unfortunately I didn't have the laser particle counter then as it was 2 years ago and this was before I DIY wash my aircon FCU very frequently.

Of coz if it's a HEPA/electrostatic mix, I guess it could matter and would perform better.

Here's the 3M Elite Allergen after 8 weeks. I Guess my room was pretty messed up then. HEPA would capture ard the same but maybe it'd not drop/bypass as much.

Anyway, i haven't seen much of a local Daikin prescence here in SG retail stores. Before the local haze problem, i did see people selling vouchers for Daikim APs, like $100 off Daikin APs, perhaps that's from buying Daikin Aircons.

Also, they were packaging 4pcs of additional filters to the AP. (Usually that is not possible with H13 APs, just too expensive for a 488 machine)

Here's a pic from someone selling on Carousell (local classifieds). I dont think they dare to advertise the word HEPA....usually other brands would plaster that all over as a selling point. :D

For Hitachi AP filters, iirc, need to go to Hitachi Home Electronics@Alexandra to purchase. I don't think other retail stores such as BD are carrying them.

At least that time, that's what the sales guy from BD told me they don't carry the filters. Now I not sure.

Not very convenient as per se. Just take note, if really want to buy Hitachi AP.

Mik1984, is this your tck70 filter as well?

The pleat gap seems similar to my 3M Filtrete MPR2200 electrostatic ....
Looks like much less pleats vs regular HEPA, usually that's due to a significanlt less pressure drop vs HEPA (even "H10"). I wonder what's the emphasis on the HEPA : electrostatic ratio at work here. ie how many % is due to "mechanical" HEPA and how many % due to electrostatics.

Actually if we were to search in part 1 before the expected Indonesian haze season and I was trying to hype awareness up :)D), there were some discussions and a Daikin salesperson did come in to try promote things, eg 4 free filters, so 5 in total. ie "no need to buy filters already, you are as good as set for life". :D
But it didn't take off.

Retail stores hate stocking up on filters. That's coz Singaporeans are generally lazy to change it out or even source to replace.

I bought 2pcs of second hand AP before...the condition is like wtf???:s13:
I am not sure if it's due to bypass leaks or the HEPA filter getting compromised (not supposed to happen, it's supposed to be 9X.X percent up there till end of serviceable life), the internals liek walls and fan are also somewhat a bit clogged with dirt or powder type of PM.

That's why we rarely follow the recommended change period, be it 6 months, 12 months, 24 months. And it definitely does not help that Sharp states 10 years. :s13:

I need to make a decision today between Sharp A50 or A60 vs Hitachi EP-A8000 or EP-A9000. I am leaning towards made in Japan Hitachi.

One thing to mention is that EP-A8000 has heavy duty deodorizing filter (whatever that mean), which is not washable under water, while EP-A9000 has washable deodorizing filter. Not sure what's the difference between them and which is better (washable vs non washable).

There is also very nice brochure and comparison table at the bottom here.

After this particular year haze, all my APs, be it Honeywell or Hitachi (not your eyeing 8000 or 9000 series) etc, all have the Chao tar smell. Ended if want to get rid the smell, need to replace all filters. Not just hepa, charcoal or carbon Prefilter. (At least for my case). One of the hepa filters not even a months old.

Not worth at all. That's one main reason I finally switched over to AX40 instead of go buy new filters for my old old APs.

As for my small Hitachi AP, I just write it off.

Not sure how's the 8000 or 9000 series. But do remember to take into considerations of the pricing and availability of the filters as well. ;)

Is there a compelling reason why you need to make a decision today knowing that the intense haze period is over?

Making decision under duress is usually not very helpful.

If you have time, do a little more research and I believe that you will live more comfortably with your decision. :s22:

I made a research already and I no longer live in SG. Now I am in Dubai, where although no haze is apparent (to the extent of Sumatra fires), the air pollution can also get quite high on some days. Also my options are quite limited in terms of brands of air purifiers and availability. Also the reason I need to make decision asap is because there is a very good promo on air purifiers right now but the stocks are limited.

I can get:
Sharp A50 for S$630 (normal price S$820)
Sharp A60 for S$770 (S$1040)
Hitachi EP-A8000 for S$695 (S$960)
Hitachi EP-A9000 for S$1100 (S$1270)

If you are going to be using the Air Purifier to take care of your deodorising needs, you are going to be spending heckloads of filters from local sources.
If your house has constant heavy odours, you'd find yourself changing the Activated Charcoal filters once every 1-2 months, because the performance would decrease as you use it.

Xiaomi has just released a new heavy duty AC filter that's meant for adsorbing Formaldehyde fast and also have the capacity to hold lots before saturation. It'd do very nicely for odours as well, coz odours are the easiest stuff to adsorb.

Do consider holding off your Sharp or Hitachi purchases. I can almost guarantee you losing interest in the AP simply because you'd be spending ~ $500 a year in filter costs coz you'd be focusing on the odour aspect.

And for your needs/focus on odours, forget about washing it and then putting it under the sun. It won't do anything at all in your case.

Those are pretty expensive prices!

I think just hold off your purchase and see what you can buy on qoo10. I am sure as long as you are willing to pay a slight premium, the qoo10 Korean sellers can hook you up with a good package, if you were to buy say 1 or 2pcs AX40 and say 6pcs of the filters. I think you will be able to get $50 per piece of replacement filter, maybe even lower.

I mean heck.....they do FedEx, it would be no sweat. And Dubai is 230V 50Hz. No issue (SG is 240V and 50Hz)

Taobao will be much more trickier for Dubai.
