Dubai Municipality Air Quality Network

Dubai is known throughout the world as a bold and forward-thinking city. When Dubai Municipality needed to upgrade their air quality network they chose to explore alternatives to traditional US EPA-type analyzers. Today a fourteen station network comprised of AQM 60 stations provides real-time continuous measurement of common air pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and particulate matter.

The Customer

Dubai Municipality is the organisation charged with managing the city’s growth and improving the quality of life enjoyed by the more than two million people who live there. Ensuring the quality of the air they breathe is an on-going challenge. The number of cars on the roads has soared, placing Dubai amongst cities with the highest rates of car ownership in the world. Furthermore Dubai’s population is expected to increase by as much as 300% over the next decade.

The Problem

To report on and manage air quality, Dubai Municipality Environment Department (DM-ED) had invested in a network of six Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AAQMS). At the time they were installed, in 1994, care was taken to select the most suitable sites and locations from which to measure and report the quality of the air in the city.

But Dubai is growing and changing so fast that, after just a few years, the network of six monitoring stations were left stranded in locations no longer as indicative as they once were. Weighing over one tonne and being the size of a removal van, the stations could not be easily moved in response to the city’s evolution.

As a result Dubai Municipality initiated a procurement process to select a suitable equipment supplier for expansion of the air quality monitoring network. The supplier would need to meet the DM ED’s requirements for price and performance as well as demonstrating the ability to deal with the extreme temperatures and frequent dust storms common in the region.

The Solution

Aeroqual, with its local partner, Enviro’ & Industrial Solutions ME, won the tender in competition with a number of global instrumentation suppliers. Dubai Municipality was drawn to the proposal based on the AQM60 air quality monitoring station for a number of reasons.

At a third of the price of traditional monitoring stations, for the same budget they were able to buy fourteen (14) AQM60s AAQMS rather than just five if they went with the traditional reference monitoring stations. This would allow Dubai Municipality to increase their density of measurement which would give them a better understanding of air quality in their rapidly developing city.

In addition, the AQM60’s compact size and lightweight format (weighing ~95% less than a reference monitoring station) allowed the stations to be located in places where traditional monitoring stations could not go. And, as the city grows and develops further, the network can be quickly and easily expanded to include locations of interest.

Total cost of ownership was another key consideration. The power draw of an AQM60 station is 10% of a traditional reference monitoring station, and the cost of spares and maintenance was calculated to be 20% of the equivalent running costs of a reference monitoring station. An optional integrated automatic calibration system reduces the number of technician visits, an attractive feature when temperatures can reach over 40°C in the hottest months.

Performance and conformity to international standards was another factor in Dubai Municipality’s decision. Because the AQM60 does not use the same measurement principles as analyser technology used in traditional reference monitoring stations, it does not carry the same US EPA equivalence approvals. However, by operating a mixed-asset solution based on fourteen AQM60s and one mobile EPA reference station, Dubai Municipality was able to have the best of both worlds – another example of Dubai’s tendency for forward-thinking.

Evaluation

The AQM60-based network extension of 14 stations has been operational since early 2012, and the equipment has been providing Dubai Municipality with more comprehensive air quality data than ever before. As a leader in the region Dubai Municipality hopes other cities will follow their example.

To that bro working in Dubai, pls note that the downtown seems to have very messed up air most of the time. You might wanna wear a N95 if you do spend a decent amount of time outside there. Luckily @ Emirates Hill some 20km away, it's much better.

It's probably not dust storm or sand storm, since the area that we are talking about is quite small (within 30km distance apart) and one part is constantly so polluted and the other part is quite ok. Pollution is pretty localised to downtown and Jebel Ali.

Sep-Oct-Nov 3-month mean ONI value = +2.0 deg C.

2015-2016 El Nino is official a SUPER El Nino status.

ONI = Oceanic Nino Index, the official ENSO index in the eyes of NOAA.

Need 2 more ONIs (means) before we know if we officially surpassed 1997.

matter of time ones... if the Paris event (2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference) they cant agree then :s22::(

China—the world’s largest emitter—actively sought to undermine negotiations in past climate conferences, but under the leadership of President Xi Jinping the country appears to have turned over a new leaf.

Is China still consider a poor country?

China pollution: Beijing issues first red smog alert

Schools in Beijing are to close and outdoor construction to stop after the Chinese capital issued its first "red alert" over smog levels.

The red alert is the highest possible, and has not been used in the city before, the state-run Xinhua news agency says.

Authorities expect more than three consecutive days of severe smog.

Cars with odd and even number plates will be banned from driving on alternate days.

Current pollution levels in Beijing are actually lower than last week's, but the red alert has been placed because of levels expected over the coming days.

The order will last from 07:00 local time on Tuesday (23:00 GMT on Monday) until 12:00 on Thursday, when a cold front is expected to arrive and clear the smog.

China's CCTV news channel reported at the weekend that some parts of Beijing had visibility of only 200m (660 feet).

Actually looking at past measurements and videos, in terms of stroke/heart attack risk with well over 3k ug/m3 and that's only coz there's measurement at one spot in Palangkaraya and not at say Sampit or Pangkalanbun etc, Kalimantan still tops China by many many times. Absolutely no fight at all.

On uncalibrated phone SPL app. Distance @ 1m approx.
(Note : it is uncalibrated, so take the levels on a relative basis, ie 10dB on the phone is not 10dB in real life)

Phone was placed on a chair, unmoved static position

MFresh M8088A
Speed 2 (326 m3/hr) = 36 dB
Speed 3 (520 m3/hr) = 47dB (yes, it's pretty loud)

Xiaomi 2 330 m3/hr = 49dB No it's not a typo. It's very loud.
Xiaomi Auto (presume it's low speed coz it's green LED) = 34 dB

Samsung AX40 high speed (323 m3/hr) = 38dB (official spec = 45dB)

As some of you would recall, previously there was some discussion/debate with bro Mindgamey with regards to the Mfresh M8088A and Xiaomi ver 1 AP's noise levels. Coz I mentioned quite a few times that I would personally not recommend ver 1 esp not in the bedroom due to the noise. There is a lower mode at 271 m3/hr and bro mindgamey measured with a calibrated SPL meter at 54dBA @ 1m (A weighting)

Seriously, with what I have played with the XM2, I would still make the same conclusion though bro mindgamey's opinion is that it's all cool and of coz I'd respect that as with anybody else's opinion as well. But do note that a few folks here and qoo10 reviews have already mentioned that even the Samsung AX40 in HIGH (323 m3/hr) needs a bit of getting used to in the bedroom as well.
The XM version 2 is supposed to be a fair bit less noisy.

I haven't got the chance to access the medium speed coz I believe the app will let you access all the modes, and I don't have time to install and pair up the device. This medium speed at low to mid 200 m3/hr would probably be the speed that you'd be opting to be at for 99.9% of the time. From the button on top, first mode is Auto (beginning of the video above), after that is Sleep mode, after that is the High speed mode (330m3/hr). Jet mode probably is to be selected via the Xiaomi app.

The design of XM2 is really good. Very avantgarde looking.
The Mfresh M8088A (71cm) or the Xiaomi 1 (73.5cm) is actually a bit too tall for bedroom placement.

The Xiaomi 1 width is 26cm. Xiaomi 2 is 24cm. M8088A is 33cm.

Dont get me wrong, the XM2 will work nicely in a living room tucked away in a corner. Its size like footprint and height is optimised for that. Good airflow in high/jet.

Most importantly is that it is cloud-enabled. So you can use it in the way that you remote control it in the MRT/bus before reaching home. Or you control it with the kids and caretaker at home with the correct fan speed, just a call back to close windows ON aircon will do.

If 2016 is somewhat hazy, it will be useful.

Good price too. Filter replacement is absolutely not an issue.
