UA is very much improved. The horror stories about US airlines are more for their domestic flights. My first flight on UA to Tokyo was 7 years ago, even then I found them ok.

That's why I said that if you expect nothing from them, you would do good, ie find them ok. But if you go and expect SQ service/products from UA, then you will be very disappointed.

Lol, if you have status with Mileage Plus, then you should get more seat pitch than other airlines as well as eat full in the lounges before boarding. Also, how about flying UA for MM status? That's why I always bring my own snacks and cup noodles when I fly UA.

I personally have PP status (will become Gold this year) and yes, I do get E+ for free if I fly (have to - 4 flights per year) with them. And yes, I do have access to lounges and yesterday trashed myself with udon curry at ANA's lounge at HND. So if I fly with UA I either bring my own food or eat before/after.

The discussion is not about me, but about other person, where money is matter apparently.

transfer to the town?
i had not been to tokyo before but planning a trip in april :s12:

NRT is 60km away. It will cost you 4000 yen promo rate (close to SGD 50) round trip via NEX to arrive at Tokyo Station (Tokyo-Eki). Limo bus ride is 3100 yen one way. There are cheaper options as well - Kesei line will take you to Nippiri for about 1300 yen but then you need to change to Tokyo Subway. So it is minimum 1.5h to get to close to center of Tokyo.

Naheda is way closer to the center of Tokyo. You can hop to Tokyo Monorail or Keikyu Line to get to Tokyo Subway. It is 15-20min ride and would cost no more than 600 yens.

When selecting airlines to fly to Tokyo, I look at price, mileage accrual and timings. Normally, UA and Delta give the better prices during certain seasons, and sometimes SQ has some really good prices during promotion period.

UA and Delta are like taking public transport to me, than the kind of service you see on SQ, JAL or ANA. I hold KrisFlyer account so normally taking UA or ANA will give me better mileage for my KrisFlyer than SQ itself.

If your vacation period is short, Haneda is better than Narita. Just as a good measure for myself, I always leave Tokyo 4 hours before flight departure time if I leave via Narita. This can be halved if I am leaving via Haneda.

Quite spot on.
But some SQ cabin crew damn fake. ANA and JAL very good service
Food on ANA is nice, if u like Jap food, but portion smaller. Personally I prefer Jap airlines, just that the wife likes SQ, cos more how lian........................

Sent from ( . ) using GAGT

Actually, my experiance with UA is just reverse as yours. I find their flight attendents in domestic flight is quite friendly. Worse one is those in Asia region as mostly are local.
In general, UA is good. Quite different from the past.

OK want to ask these saying UA is 'good' - when was the last time you used them?

I stopped flying UA 2 years ago sagas I've described (including almost broken teeth).

Last NOV/2015, from Singapore to Tokyo.
I guess sometime we are just too picky. Demend and paid for something we do not even need. Some people has flying "brain" when they start to talk to their friend about their holiday and mention they fly with SQ!

One of my USA friend did that. He as so happy when his company put him on SQ on business trip as he will never pay at that kind of price when he is on holiday with his own pocket.

End of Oct '15, flew ANA for SG$585 return. Fare was on promo. Would consider JAL if cheap as well. Flew UA couple of times before due to work and will never fly them if I had a choice. In fact, I would avoid all US carriers unless I am flying domestic in US. Their service is beyond terrible.

My last straw was when after the flight being delayed 3 hours, they pushed back from the gate and was taxiing to the runaway, then they said that the control tower is stopping them from taking off because the flight crew and cabin crew have exceeded the regulatory amount of hours they are allowed. then had to wait another 2 hours to switch crews. During that time, everyone was stuck on the aircraft and no food or drinks were served. When they changed crew, they started serving sandwiches and this old male flight attendant who looks like a grand dad was tossing the sandwiches at passengers like a clown thinking it was funny. If he tossed it at me I would have threw it back at him. I mean, how can that even be appropriate. I missed my connecting flights and had to wait another 8 hours at my layover airport to catch a flight back.

No way I am ever flying them if I have to pay.

last flight on UA was Nov 2015

flew to Japan five times last year. Took SQ, ANA and UA

as some have mentioned, dont expect the world when u take UA and u will be fine. seriously, its just a flight. even if the service is like ****, lousy food, no shows to watch, its still just a flight

if UA or Delta or even Jetstar is much cheaper i will just take it.
to me price is number 1 priority

if too big a difference I rather spend the money on a better hotel room or nicer food

if you pay for the better airlines, you will be much better taken care of in the event that anything happens, thats one thing to consider.
with the less premium airlines, if anything happens its really just too bad, dont expect anything from them

i think many pple like to take SQ just so that they can how lian to their friends

of cos if price not too big a difference just take SQ, who will take the other airlines

So it's about me me me me me. Only me and the world must revolve around me and turn on my instructions. Nobody gives two hoots about you if I have to be absolutely honest.

Not sure why so many negativity in UA here. My first time flying with UA and Im a satisfied passenger. Just flew in Jan 2016 to Tokyo.
Seats are spacious. Not old. Not inferior to SQ.
Flight entertainment choices less than SQ but more than sufficient. Individual TV with movies like FastnFurious7, BigHero6, Instetellar etc.
Breakfast chicken noodles and almond bread was yummy. Dinner rice was ok although no ice cream. Lousiest food goes to Qantas.
Service was good. Japanese flight attendants not rude at all. On my way back to SG, there's an American steward and he's not rude also.
Well, not all SQ crew provides good service. Hence, not all UA crew members offer bad service. For my flights, they were good!

I heard that the crew in delta and UA flights from SIN-TOKYO and back usually consists of mainly english speaking japanese crew?
Means the service can't be bad
