It really depends on which genre of music you are using with Pro-EQ.

If you're talking about mainly music with vocalist in it, and not use many instrument which produces mid-high to high freq, then yea, it is good.

but from my experience, Classical with Pro-EQ totally killed almost everything in the mids-high section (eg flute, clarinet, oboe, etc)

so i guess its time for some experiment for you guys to determine when and which music to enable Pro-EQ.

*atm, i'm not using Pro-EQ

Indeed, I feel like ProEQ is really suitable for the genres of music I listen to, which are mainly mainstream titles. However, when I listen to OSTs (Final Fantasy etc.), I find that it excels better without EQ. :s12:

Does format and quality (hires vs standard 16bit vs mp3) also make a difference in the impact/requirement of eq or no-eq?

If you were to put EQ aside, and let's just say, we use a track from... hmm. ok maybe i shall put it in my case.

I have both 24bit/96kHz and 16/44.1 for Daft Punk RAM album (Eagles as well). both high res and standard 16bit do have a significant difference, in terms of 3D "airiness" and "staging", the layering of musicality in the entire frequency spectrum, and vocals/instruments are tend to be more life-like (life-like in the sense that eg when the bass pad kicks, there are times when the kick isnt that strong or too strong, due to the amt of strength used to kick the bass pads)

I don't wanna talk about MP3. but if you're thinking of MP3 320 and 16/44.1 do not make any (or much) of a difference, you are right as well. But one must consider the type of recording and mastering behind that music. tbh, mainstream pop music, be it flac or mp3 320, it hardly make any difference. If there is a difference, it is insignificant to me at least.

now, back to EQ topic. the purpose of EQ-ing is to perhaps, either to bring out some emphasis onto a certain range of frequency, or to reduce it. So applying EQ to any quality of music, it really depends on where you wanna bring out in the frequency spectrum of that music.
Sometimes enabling EQ makes one's music to be less, or more enjoyable. but EQ is genre specific. so you cant basically have the same EQ for all genres.

I hope it answers your question, @sidrpm

I mainly using flac, while I said all the instruments sounded more refine and better positioned... i find myself listening more to all the difference instruments which is quite tiring for prolonged listening.

My reply is not specifically aimed at the AK120's function of pro-EQ, but behind the fundamental benefits of proper equalisation. I'm not a purist myself, so yes I'm a believer of equalising music/specific genres in order to suit my own listening preference/lessen listening fatigue. I have actually responded to other fellow forumers before in regards to this topic, so I would suggest you guys to give the following threads a read.

Slightly OT, but a nice gift for your AK100/120 etc etc

quote from Linn's website:

Every day in December we’ll be giving away a different, free Studio Master track, available to download from Sunday 1st December.

This Christmas gift will allow you to explore and expand your musical tastes with a host of different genres, up-coming musicians and a few well-known favourites.

But we know no-one likes waiting, so in the festive spirit here’s a taster of what’s to come — enjoy an award-winning choral piece from Handel’s world-famous Messiah by Dunedin Consort.

Do you guys think A&K will release a new player with the DSD-supported Wolfson WM8741 DACs anytime soon?

In your opinion, is it worth to get the Red Wine versions of the AK120?

As of now, there isn't any news of a new player using the Wolfson WM8741 from the AK series.

As for Red Wine mod... i personally dont think there is a need to do the mod. bcoz once u mod it, warranty from AK and distributor would be void, and if 1 day *touch wood* spoils, you need to send it back to Red Wine to get it fixed...

So i suggest that you wait till nearing the end or after the 1yr warranty to get it modded. :D thats what im thinking of doing now. :D

If no hurry, wait for AK200.

Don't waste unnecessary money upgrading again.

Haha, if AK200 comes out, its just going to get on the "next level" of expensive. AK120 already crazy ex for me.
My current rig is actually already very good for me *maybe i got accustomed to the sound*, so I'm not sure how else it can improve.
Only interested in the AK120 'cos managing space on my 16gb nano is a pain.

Now just need to find out who can offer it cheaper then i can take the plunggeeeee

To the owners out there, is the AK120 considered a warm or bright sounding dap? :s11:
