A shop at Changsha automatically waived the 3% for above rmb200 purchase for me last year
My friend also has similar experience in Beijing and was told can be done for purchase up to RMB1k

how does this work ?
i thought this special promotion is for wechat only. the promotion is for new wechat users who link an international card for the first and valid for 30 days only.

Very difficult to answer your question... no details, no nothing.... how will others know how many days will u be in SZ, with how many ppl and what u going to spend. Bring 1-10,000 sgd should be fine.

Agreed, depends on your profile. If your schedule and activities is go eat, shop and sightseeing with e-payments (Alipay/WeChatPay) usage complimenting cash, then 2000 is pretty much sufficient or even a lot to bring.
Having that much cash while travelling also increases the risk of misplacing it too, so please evaluate your plans and decide accordingly.

Although I have not used cash for last few visits, I still carry a bit of cash. The system may be cashless but that's only if your phone works all the time.

There are signs displayed clearly on many shops glassdoors in shopping mall shops in SZ (eg. i went to Coco Park) that now accept Visa / MC / AMEX / JCB in SZ.

Continue to bring cash also. Theres many Hongkies in SZ so cash and Visa/ MC are widely accepted in malls.
Many food places also accept cash

Those "cashless" stores typically cater to young xmm crowd (kiosks / bubble tea etc) or street stalls / trishaw stalls

Trying to set up Alipay for my wife and daughter. Seems like they can't receive funds in their balance even after verification. Has something changed for new users?

No. Depends on source of funds. A little complicated.

Don't need to have balance to use. Link to SG credit and debit cards. Can use in China only. Any payments will be decided to link card. On arrival in China make small purchase to test.
