I've also come to the same conclusion. PDF and comics are best read on a 9.7 inch tablet. PW series are too slow for those.
I wouldn't say that your Touch is outdated in the sense that it still does whatever it does really well. (Unless the screen is really getting worse due to years of being switch on...)

My voyage has quite a few manga and pdf files. I find that if you convert your pdf files to mobi, it makes them load the fast as amazon ebook. The same applies to manga converted to mobi. It loads up quickly. Same applies for the paperwhite, although the loading speed won't be as fast as the voyage though.
It is not about loading speed but you have to zoom in and out...
I zoom in and out all the time when I use the ipad mini to read comics, but it's painless compared to the e-ink readers. Zooming is fluid and fast on tablets, but on pw or voyage, it's frustrating because of sluggishness. So unresponsive it makes me want to scream.

If it is colored comic book it is still ok and I actually used my ipad 2 to read comics...I don't need to zoom in and put to read on the ipad...The thing I don't like is if I'm reading black and white comics which is tiring to look at the white light on the ipad...
