Mi Box S should be okay, you can Install Kodi or VLC player. If you are buying Mi Box S, you can buy from Mi Stores, like in JEM, Vivo City, Funan and Bedok Mall, usually at S$99 and occasionally on offer at S$89. Online shops may be cheaper though down to S$70.

But if you are purely playing local media files and do not need Netflix HD, then Minix NEO T5 may be a better choice as it has a faster CPU, gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 port. Probably online only to get the good price of S$99.

mibox s is not budget box :)

it is a very capable box.

surprised to hear that some articles said it doesn't support srt substitle. -- these must be **** articles -- all andriod boxes, even the cheap $20 box, can support srt subtitle.

Thank you for the prompt replies! Looks like I may settle for the Mi Box S, Xiaomi has an official agent bringing in the products here. Would greatly prefer to buy locally retail set, than risk parallel import set.

As for the Minix NEO T5, are there any local shops / agent bringing it in? Their website seems to not have Singapore in it. Nearest is Thailand.

Otherwise I think I may stick to Mi Box S.

Minix has a local agent but the markup is high (selling at S$150) so not worth it. If you want to stick to sets with local warranty, go for Mi Box S.

if both minix and xiaomi are $90+

no reason not to buy minix, if you are not interested in using netflix.

the local shop name for minix is valuebestasia on qoo10/shopee.

not agent, but HWZ members' favourite.

the so-called agent cut throat.

tv boxes, especially good brand like xiaomi, or better brand like minix, are very reliable, so warranty is not important.

Yes, not using Netflix or doing any form of streaming. Just purely using my external HDD to play videos. Looks like it's gonna be Mi Box S then. Time to replace my dead WD TV Box that is around 10 years old. Thanks for the heads up!

the ads are from the box itself?

or you installed the wrong app?

or the box come installed with viruses?

for youtube, use smartyoutubetv then you won't see the ads.

Hi Gregory, thank you for the recommendation of this app, “SmartYoutubetv”. Please tell me can I can sign-in to my own user id?

What IPTV player app do you use in your Android box? I have a paid subscription, and looking for a good intuitive player.

So far, I have tried:
Kodi
Perfect Player
Tivimate

I haven’t used Duplex TV yet. Someone recommended it to me but can’t install it to my box.

Thanks in advance.

Tivimate looks nice. I also use GSE IPTV Player.

Anybody using the latest gen 8 unblock tech box?
Can give some review about it?
Thanks alot

No need to buy Gen 8, not worth it, just buy Gen 7 UPro S will do if you want to buy Ubox.

After all, the HW cost of Gen 8 HW is probably only S$20 more than Gen 7, both are low end boxes compared to a S$60-S$80 Amlogic S905X3 box.

The value is more on the bundled IPTV app, which even a Gender 4/5/6 Ubox can run.

can see whole world channel? Need pay yearly subscription?

IMHO the yearly subscription IPTV packages sold here in the online platforms are not really legitimate sevices and will stop working any time.

Same for preloaded boxes.

Buy at your own risks.
