Dear SingTel,

I had four Airties nodes installed by Tech over the weekend - connected directly to ONR and was told that the latest firmware (FW) has been installed (on site). Wireless connection is pretty stable now.

Had accessed the Airtie Mesh User Interface (i.e. Setup Assistant at ez/airtiesmesh/com) earlier and found difficulties discovering/accessing the 2nd node. Only managed to access it (via the UI) after multiple attempts.

Discovered that the 2nd node is on FW 1.3.25.3 while the other three nodes (i.e. 1st, 3rd and 4th) are on FW1.21.10.2.1665.

When I accessed the FIRST node and set a password for the UI, it applied to all three nodes except the 2nd one (on FW 1.3.25.3) and it had to be done separately and individually.

I would appreciate your advice if the inconsistent FW among the nodes is normal. If otherwise, should I manually update FW for the 2nd node? (would need the link then, please).

Had contacted 1688 and was advised to leave as it is because there was no prompt to update FW in the system. Have highlighted that Airties are connected directly to ONR but again advised that FW is auto updated from SingTel backend hence it is needless for me to do anything.

What is ONR? Do you mean ONT (optical network terminal)?

For my case, ONT to Router (AC1900) to Airties.

Network setup with Mesh into 3rd party router set as access point.

I just signed up Singtel Fibre and will discontinue with Starhub as soon as my network is up working well.

I intend to connect the Singtel provided router (AC1900) to the ONT in my living room. Also connected to the AC 1900 will be my Singtel Mio TV box that sits beside this router through LAN cable

I intend to connect another LAN cable to another 2nd router (most likely ASUS RT88U) about 10-15m away in my study room. This router will be set as access point. On this router, I intend to connect through LAN cable 2 units PC in my study room. This router will provide also provide wifi coverage to my 3 bedrooms that is surrounding the study room (i.e. study room is right in the centre of the 3 bedrooms)

I also intend to to connect Mesh to the ASUS router in the study room and a corresponding mesh unit to a 2nd Singtel mio tv box in my bedroom nearby.

Can this work? Will mesh be able to plug into the LAN port of the ASUS router configured as AP?

Hi Maxuro

If you intend to use MESH, you dont have to use ASUS router anymore. One MESH connected to your AC1900 and place another MESH in the middle of your house. All areas should be covered with 2 MESH unless you unit is huge.

Note: It is good practice to even off your WIFI on AC1900. So not a good idea to have ASUS WIFI and plus MESH. Just use MESH for WIFI.

There is no issue with Ethernet backhaul.

As for the query on the Airties iOS app, it will be available soon.

Finally, Singtel support understands what is Ethernet Backhaul and push the latest firmware to me (1.21.10.2.1665).

This is my observation:
1. Wireless Backhaul
Since only first WIFI MESH is connected to AC1900 router (i connected to port 3), hence, both first and second WIFI MESH (Airties), are seen connected to port 3. 2nd WIFI MESH should be wirelessly connected to 1st WIFI MESH. Hence, we only see the same port (port 3), for all the devices connected to WIFI MESH.

Note: I disabled AC1900 wireless as suggested.

2. Ethernet Backhaul
1st WIFI MESH (Airties) connected to port 3 of AC1900.
2nd WIFI MESH (Airties) connected to port 1 of AC1900.

In addition, I have experience my laptop frequent disconnect from WIRELESS by AIRTIES WIFI MESH which is unusual after upgrade of firmware (1.21.10.2.1665)? Are there known bugs?

While on ethernet backhaul, I notice, pinging to both WIFI MESH (Airties), will have request time out, as compared to wireless backhaul, the ping is consistent without request time out.

Does Ethernet Backhaul have issue which is why not propagate to all AIRTIES users?

And when can we use the AIRTIES app on IOS to manage the AIRTIES?

Yes, the above are observed from AC1900 GUI.

My 1 Gbps is issued with an ONR (i.e. Optical Netowork Router), which I understand is ONT+Router. My SingTel TV and Airties are connected directly to it. I did not use the SingTel issued router in my setup.

The thing is that I require the second Asus router not just for wifi but for my 2 pcs in my study room which is a distance away from the first router in the living room.

Why I still need mesh is that I want to connect wirelessly to a 2nd mio tv box in my bedroom that is beside the study room where the second router Asus will sit.

I was told maybe this also can be achieved via a unmanaged switch

Omg, I am so confuse now if I should buy the second Asus router, an unmanaged switch

As far as I know, even if you're on ethernet backhaul, you'll still have a primary and secondary nodes. That explains why you'll realise the discrepancy. It doesn't affect performance because even velop I'm using now does it.

If you're particular in it, you'll have to spread the nodes further apart so that coverage hardly overlaps with another..

I am asking for my understanding. Mesh wifi does not issue IP addresses, instead, IP addesses assignment is still by the AC1900 (for my case). Hence, it does matter, if I am connected to 1st WIFI MESH (port 3), but in the router (AC1900), it shows that i am connected to router via port 1 (which is 2nd WIFI MESH).

If it is wireless backhaul, it is understandable, that it will via the WIFI MESH (Airties) that connected to the AC1900 hence port 3 in my case.

So for ethernet backhaul, I would expect devices connected to 1st WIFI MESH, should show up in AC1900 connected devices via port 3, instead of port 1(2nd WIFI MESH).

Why it matters to me, because, all AIRTIES notes with ethernet backhaul, should direct the bandwidth from the AC1900 instead going through another node, (in my case port 1 for 2nd AIRTIES).

When I bring down 2nd AIRTIES, all devices connected to 1st Airties, will be shown in AC1900 they are indeed connected to port 3. However, when 2nd AIRTIES are back online, all device connected (be it from 1st or 2nd AIRTIES) are seen as from port 1 only.

As I am using airties, I can tell that the IP address assignment is still by router (AC1900). AC1900 is using 192.168.1.x IP addresses and Airties simply uses the DHCP server of AC1900. Not assigning its own IP addresses, like google home wifi, which to AC1900, it will be one IP address say 192.168.1.122, then anything connected to it, will be assigned separate range of IP addresses such as 192.168.19.x which router does not aware of them.

In Airties, it does not assign a separate IP address but uses AC1900 DHCP assignment. Which is something I like as I dont have to have do double NAT to do port forwarding.

If Singtel explanation that why I only see port 1, when ethernet backhaul, then my question will be why not port 3 as it is the first node to connect to router, followed by second node. Shouldn't that which ever connect to router first will be master as in wireless backhaul?

Hi Maxuro,

I know you want Singtel opinion. While waiting for Singtel, let me give you my perspective.

Firstly, if you want unmanaged switch, you don't have to buy ASUS router. Unmanaged switch such as TP-Link 1Gbps 8-ports cost like $39 at Challenger with membership.

Also, if you use ASUS router to connect to your AC1900 by a LAN cable, unless you configure ASUS router as wired-repeater, you won't be able to watch SingtelTV even when you connect to MESH.

Therefore, my suggestion will be just buy unmanaged switch (such as TP-Link), and do what you have suggested. It will work. or the alternate way without ugly cable should work as well.

Here it is:

ONT ---> AC1900 (here you have your 1st Singtel TV box at the living room plus 1 Airties MESH.

Put your 2nd Airties MESH in your study room. Connect out to TP-Link unmanaged switch from 2nd Airties MESH, your 2 PCs can connect to this TP-Link switch and so does your bedroom SingtelTV. (With assumption you will still need to lay cables to your 2 PCs and SingtelTV and assume that your study room is nearby 2 PC and bedroom).

The only difference is you don't need to wire from living room to study room. You can do so if you want. And instead of ASUS router (Which may cost a bomb), you just buy unmanaged switch.

As far as I know, technically, it works. The only thing is Singtel Technician will tell you that they only configure Singtel TV to AC1900 or to AirTies MESH. Anything in between, is not Singtel Issue.

Hopefully, Singtel will get back to you on this.

ONR will be like a device of integrated router without WiFi.

So you'll just need to get an AP and your network is completed..

Surprisingly I just get Singtel Fibre Internet installed on my 2nd address recently (30 Mar 2017) and was provided ONT plus AC1900. Not ONR.

Hence, I was not aware that Singtel does provide ONR. On downside with ONR, mean, your ONR distance with fibre, cannot be too far away. Unlike ONT + AC1900, if I have prelaid CAT 6E cable, I can relocate my AC1900 anywhere within my house. Of course, with ONR is possible, but you have to introduce another router/AP.

Hi Maxuro,

We recommend that you plug the Airties WiFi Mesh to the Singtel RG or AP.

Third party RG or AP might have compatibility issues.

I was told what I need based on my requirements would be a unmanaged switch instead of a 2nd router {Asus RT88).

In this case, Airties wife mesh can work through the switch right?

One of the options as specified by johnnytanhardwarezone is to have your 2nd mesh node in study room then have a cable connect (from 2nd mesh) out to your switch and then to your PCs.

AC 1900 -- (cable) -- 1st mesh -- (wireless) -- 2nd mesh -- (cable) -- PCs
and 2nd mesh -- (wireless) -- 3rd mesh -- (cable) -- Singtel TV

Note that your PCs will then be running on wireless connection bcos it is connected to the airties mesh. The 2nd mesh will wirelessly connect to your 3rd mesh node in bedroom for ST TV.

Alternatively, your can have a cable from AC1900 to an unmanaged switch in your study then to your PCs - it is more stable that way bcos PCs are connected on cable instead of wirelessly. You will still have your second Airties mesh in your study room and it will take care of wireless function to all your bedrooms (ASUS will not be needed), including your Singtel TV connected to a 3rd mesh.

I asked Tech during my installation, so I believe second Singtel TV might not work if your second mesh is connected to the switch (then wirelessly to 3rd mesh) cos the switch is a non-smart switch hence incapable of issuing IP.

I also believe it will also not work if you connect it to another router (ASUS) after AC1900 cos ASUS will be an AP then and the IPs on AC1900 and ASUS will be different. May be you can do a test..

Just my views for your consideration.. ST might have better solution.

On this switch, I intend to connect via wired to 2 PCs and also the first Mesh.
I do not think to connect the first mesh to AC 1900 because the distance to the study room may be too far.

That is why I ask Singtel if the 1st mesh will work if i plug into the switch but ST not yet reply. The second mesh will be in my bedroom beside my study room for the singtel mio tv. The two mesh will also provide wifi coverage to the study room and bedroom area. The living room area wifi coverage will be provided by AC 1900.

I have already bought the unmanaged switch. Renfred 89, a big help and excellent contributor to this tread already told me that I will need a switch more than a second router (originally intended Asus RT 88).

I still not very sure if the 1st unit of Mesh can be connected to the switch instead of the AC 1900.

an unmanaged switch itself, is just a dummy device which expands the rj45 ports. It doesn't interfere with traffic unless your switch runs on layer 2 and above.

So for example if you connect this way,

TP>ONT>singtel router>switch>PCs + singtel wifi mesh

Then the above setup is similar to:

TP>ONT>singtel router>PCs + singtel wifi mesh.

I guess the idea Singtel is trying to say is that do keep your network as simple as possible and singtel wifi mesh units work best when connected to singtel wireless router, regardless if there is a switch between wifi mesh and the wireless router.

Do note that if singtel wifi mesh is connected to 3rd party routers, you will not receive OTA updates to firmware which time to time will bring in fixes and features. The new latest update brings ethernet backhaul and can only be updated automatically through server push via singtel wireless router. :)

Of cos, but mentioning singtel wireless routers, AC1900, AC elite, AC plus models are all supported in addition to aztech routers. Older singtel routers may not work though, best is to check with 1688 or let singtel clarify here..

Thanks for the clarification, in this case, the switch is much better and cheaper solution that the Asus RT 88 as a second router without having to have any updates or configuration.

But will this slow down the speed in any way?

As well for the AC 1900 in my living room, can I leave the wireless feature on so that it can cover devices in the living room. Usually, I understand that if the mesh is connected right next to the AC 1900, you have to switch off the wifi in the AC 1900. But for my case, the AC 1900 in the my living room to the switch in my study room is not that close and the mesh connected to the switch (position beside) may not cover the living room for the wifi
