Urm . In UQ , first year for my PhD in epidemiology but I have preliminary conditions attached to my research. Have to look at the data that the hospitals ( Royal Brisbane and Princess Alexandra as well as a few others ) collected before I finalise my proposal. I think I will be crying if they did not merge the data.

I know a few people in Brisbane who can take us around. One is an ex-nurse - we used to work together in canberra, the other is a dental student who I knew in melbourne. I was an ex nurse too.

Really, awesome!! Have you been in OZ for quite some time already?
and yah, I went to check out UniLodge online..they look awesome! Really couldn't tell the thin and fallible walls from the pictures. Are you going to be staying there till you finish your PhD?

i dun think unilodge is a wise choice for UQ students. no point staying in the city, pay such high price and still have to take ferry or bus to uni. for QUT students its understandable, cos unilodge is directly outside their campus.

Oh dear... then do you know of any other good recommendations for accomodation around UQ then? Other than the on-campus lodgings... having a headache about where to stay now....

depends, we have to do preclinical prac work on farm so it eats into our holiday...the semester usually starts in feb..btw u sure med school starts in jan? coz i got frens there and they started their sem with me...accoms, hmm...dun take the colleges, try international house i heard good things about it...

wat degree did u do prior to GMP ?

Farm work sounds like fun! :)
Yep, that's what they'd stated on my acceptance letter..21st Jan. How I wish it'll be in feb so i can stay in S'pore till chinese new year's over! *sobs*
Sigh, I should have applied for international house, but I could only apply to one accomodation at a time and silly me went to choose campus lodge instead. Now it all looks bleak and I have to start looking elsewhere.
Anyway I did Life sciences (concentration in biomed) in NUS.. :)

Yes . Been here for more than 5 years.

I am not sure if I will be staying there til I finish my PhD. Can't say for sure.I will be looking at other places during the first 6 months in Brisbane.

My advice is to try unilodge first for one semester so that you don't get stuck worrying about your accomodation, homeless or forced to pay a very high price for rental. That is what I am doing. They quoted me 218 bucks for a single studio which looked like a shoebox but I got a hold on a double studio (238 per week) . Their prices are comparable to Cromwell's Campus Lodge - and you don't need to share bathroom in Unilodge. Transport is an added cost but with the student concession , it will be 40+ dollars per month I think. Unilodge is about 1 or 2 blocks down from Queen's Mall bus depot, so it is convenient.

Unilodge have a 500 dollar holding fee in which you have to cancel 21 days prior to your check-in date. So hold them first and look at the others . If some college offers up , cancel in time( 21 days prior to your check in) and get your full refund back.

The reason why I picked unilodge was because I stayed in the Sydney Unilodge and I had a good experience there cept for the thin walls part. My friends stayed in Melbourne Unilodge which was also pretty good - I went to their place for a look see .

Throw your applications everywhere or else you are pretty much in trouble because you are coming in the peak period of rentals where people are also moving interstate for contracts as well as students coming in early. This is from my experience moving interstate. December , Jan, Feb are peak periods when it comes to the residential rental market.

International House has early applications in october like most colleges. So to apply now is rather late. You can still try but they won't guarantee.

Why don't you do the MBBS/PhD stream in UQ?

I didn't think of doing medicine initially when I first entered Uni, and I'm not very confident about doing PhD as well. Anyway I'm more interested in the clinical aspect rather than the research aspect.

And you know what, I think I'll do just that with UniLodge! but do you think there are still rooms available? What's the difference between the double-bed and single-bed studios? I don't think they showed pictures of the double-bed studio online. Should I apply online first or call them up first? i've emailed them days ago but no one seems to be replying me..wat's the best way for me to reach them? Sorry to bother you with all my questions! :p

the double-bed studio should be bigger than the single-bed studio. think the double-bed studio comes with a stove but i can't be 100% sure.

most of the smaller single-bed studios don't come with a stove in the room. the bigger one does, prob the rooms at the corner.

Use their application form. Apply first since it is free- http://www.unilodge.com.au/locations/bookings.asp?Location=Brisbane . They will email you with the floorplan , application forms etc.

Worse come to worse - call up Andy Ng . He's the manager in charge of reservations. He's pretty good . He tries his best to accomodate me within my budget :) .

Single bed room - shoebox no stove unless you want to pay 262 per week for air con and a stove

Double bed room - bigger with a stove .

More money = air con
Saving money (like me) = non air con

Want to look at pics ? I used their units for sale site http://www.unilodgerealty.com.au) to look at the pics:

Double room (20sqm)
http://www.unilodgerealty.com.au/more.asp?ID=141

Single room (18sqm)
http://www.unilodgerealty.com.au/more.asp?ID=127

Deluxe(22sqm)
http://www.unilodgerealty.com.au/more.asp?ID=126

Hope that helps

I am also hesitant to do the PhD . I finished my master research project and by that time I was ready to pull my hair out over the report. Mine was focusing on data analysis of a complex raw dataset which meant I had to clean it a few times (literally scrubbed my data til it became clean).

But my colleagues who did their PhD said I was fortunate because the data already has been collected. Most of them got stuck on data collection.

the weather has been rather eratic over the years

feb to june/july is autumn. shouldn't be too hot or too cold. but this year feb was pretty cooling and rained for quite a fair bit in the 1st couple of weeks i was there.

june/july is the start of winter. so if you are only thinking of staying for 6 months, it should be alright without aircon. if not, get a fan.

usually students are back home holidaying during the hottest period - summer which is now.

beginning of this month also raining quite a fair bit though in brissie. not too sure now cos i'm already back in sg since mid of the month

Humid like Singapore. Queensland is tropical unlike NSW or VIC.

Takes a while to adapt to non air con - I did that. My current place has no air con or heater (even) . So I can survive in extreme heat or extreme cold in Canberra ( except when it gets to -4 at night) .

I just don't like humid climates because I am used to dry ones.

Oh well. See how it goes. A portable air con costs around 599 anyways. Just buy one and install it in your sliding window if you cannot tahan. I just bought a portable to send to Brisbane .

Haha. As humid as Singapore? Brisbane humility varies quite abit eh? Somedays it's on 40% and other days up to 70%. Anyway, I do not see it as a problem for myself, as I use neither an aircon nor fan in Sg.

Last I went there ....hahah I don't know - the last few times I went to brisbane , it reminded me of Singapore (plus the heat rashes).

From what I know - International House has shut their applications.

You either have to take up temp accomodation to find shared accomodation or opt for something slightly more expensive like unilodge.
