can a person reasonably take care of a dog alone?

feel like keeping one, but worry the dog might feel depressed at home when im away at work for long hours.

much depends on the dog character and age. older dog tends to be able to cope better being alone but illness can be concern.

my advise is best not to unless you willing to sacrifice. alone looking after a dog can be stressful and difficult.

I have to wake up early to walk and prepare meal for my dog and rush home to do the same every weekday. Weekend I spent my time mostly with her home or outing.

Possible but it takes a lot of commitment unless you want the dog to suffer, which is cruel and frankly inhumane.

Even with a 9 to 5 job you’d have to wake up earlier to walk the dog before work, go home after work to feed/walk them. (Or you should anyway), and let’s not get to overseas travel…

Maybe consider fish? Or a cat? But some cats seem very affectionate too despite them having a reputation for being independent.

Just sharing my exp as a previous dog owner:

I adopted my dog when she was 8 years old. She passed away last year at 16 and yes, I was very sad when she passed on. It was tougher in the last 2 years when she had dementia. 8 years is not a long period but it is not short either. Since there is no one at home during weekdays, she will be left alone at home but I don't lock up her in a cage juz let the roam ard the house with the fans on. But ya, the heart pain is real when I had to make the decision to put her down especially when I see her old age body getting weaker and weaker day by day.

I still rmb on the day of cremation, the staff asked me 'Sir, can I have your permission to carry on with the cremation'? My heart drop and wept...

In memories of her, I still keep her bed, her clothing , her pics in the house and my phone wallpaper. Everyday, I will greet her good morning and good night when before I turn in to bed. You may think it silly but I also told her to jiayou whenever she is on the other side over the rainbow bridge as much as I will also jiayou in our world.

For pet owner, this is as good as losing a family member.

if you love dogs, i suggest you volunteer in animal shelter. the shelters really need manpower to walk & care for the dogs there.
This is a good idea. First hand see for yourself if you can handle a dog. Imagination is very different from reality

My dog is already 14yo and very old and slow already. Sometimes I think of his death in the near future and I already want to cry.

I'd second having a cat instead...
cat when sick will have hard time feeding them med, they aren't friendly to allow you to feed med, you will be stressed out. I have issue with some dogs being incorporate but will not attack me. cat will not hesitate to scratch you. unless cat lover, i advise to stay away for non cat lover.

If all goes well, the cat won't be sick for most of its life what...

I'm more thinking along the lines of leaving them alone (or rather, they prefer not to be annoyed by their "butlers/servants"), which matches the scenario of most working adults living on their own.
