According to TD Ameritrade Asia’s (Singapore’s) Web site, there are some significant limitations:

1. You can only trade U.S. equities (and other securities traded on U.S. exchanges). Not the popular Irish-domiciled London-traded ETFs, as a notable omission. This limitation is significant for most non-U.S. persons, unless you happen to be very focused on individual stock picking.

3. The Web site says that non-U.S. persons must fund accounts in U.S. dollars only. Singapore dollar funds (check or wire) are specifically excluded, according to the Web site.

4. Yes, there’s some cost for withdrawals.

Are these points still true? I am looking to do passive investing (60K) in Irish-domiciled London-traded ETFs.

Citibank CitiAccess (free inward TT ; hardly any interest on US$ deposits ; first US$ cheque book free ; no minimum balance if you already have at least S$15k in other Citibank accounts)

Maybank Foreign Currency Current Account (0.6% on US$ deposits ; not free inward TT ; all US$ cheque book free ; minimum balance US$1k)

CIMB Foreign Currency Account (don't use it but can consider ; free inward TT ; free US$ cheque book ; no interest on US$ deposits ; minimum balance US$1k)

TDAmeritrade is currently having a promo. US$88 for referrals who open an account with minimum US$3,500. Can split 50-50. If anyone is interested, PM me. Cheers!

25 free commission trades if open with at least US$10,000. Please note terms and conditions at the below link.
https://www.tdameritrade.com.sg/tdaa/index.html#!/whytdaa/promotions

There is free real-time streaming of US market data.
Free CNBC video in the platform. No activity fees or monthly fees.

Also, i don't know how it works. But, during the US's tax season, they refund my account with some (not all) of the withholding tax i paid on dividends. So, effectively, the 30% withholding rate isn't really 30%. Not sure if other brokerages do this because TDAmeritrade is the only platform i do US equities on. So, i wouldn't call it a pro at this point. Maybe other forumers can share on interactive brokers or schwab etc.

Thank you Final 1

All brokerage commissions and fees are negotiable if you are an active trader or a professional. If you know your stuff, you can easily call the brokerage trading desk to deal direct and secure tighter bid - offer spreads.

I don't think interactive brokers allow that. I heard IB charges hedge fund managers who use them as prime brokers the same rate as retail investors.

Their flat fees of USD10.62 per trade seem high. They have a TD Ameritrade Singapore Pte Ltd here, will it be easier to communicate when there is problem or transfer fund?

You can get a flat rate fee of USD1.50 on TD per trade with us after you complete a class with us.
Our class is Skillsfuture approve course. Check out this link bit.ly/calebITP and register.

USD1.50 for how long or how many trades?

Who is the trainer and what is his or her credentials? Being skills future approved is not a validation of the course.

All brokerage rates can be negotiated. I have negotiated for preferential rates with my broker as well. IB is by far the cheapest for retail investors. But one can get other brokerages to match as well.

Are you sure you get $1.50 per trade? From what I know in another course, the minimum is NOT $1.50.

Show your TOS fees here. If you can prove this, then I encourage everyone to attend, even if you learn nothing. $1.50 is too good to be true. Heck, even I will pay for the full amount of your class to get $1.50 per trade, not whatever else.

Hi People,

I have been using Interactive Brokers, but contemplating on switching broker.

Does anyone know, why is it USD$6.95 per trade for TD Ameritrade?
but USD$10.65 per trade for TD Ameritrade SG?

I am Singaporean, residing in Singapore.
Could I open account with TD Ameritrade instead?
Has anyone done that?

Cheers.

Dont see the usa website, we can only open with the sg office.
Terms and conditions are different too.

Keep IBKR dont close it.
TDa can only trade us markets.

What is the reason for switching out from IB ?

The SG TDA is more expensive probably because of some regulatory hurdles.

You can't expect a foreign broker to offer same rate like IB while having an office in Singapore and conforming to the MAS rules.

There are 2 reasons for wanting to switch broker.

1st:

Below is the kind of commission I have been paying IB.
e.g.:
- 8000 shares of EXK, USD$40 (buy) & USD$41.37 (sell)
- 6000 shares of FSM, USD$30 (buy) & USD$31.15 (sell)

whereas TD Ameritrade SG is offering a 'flat commission' of USD$10.65 per trade.

2nd:

IB has no free access to streaming real-time data.

whereas TD Ameritrade offers free access to trading tools, streaming real-time data and powerful analytics.

I use both.
IBKR for long.
TDa for short. (Just open account, fund in usd3500, you get free real time data. Why not?)

Going short doesn't totally mean shorting the shares. I use TD for options selling, much more powerful charts and execution.

That said, i do use it for short selling 😅😄
Margin interests kick in only if you hold overnight, and yes TD has one of the highest, if not the highest interests so its not good to hold shorts.

I split long and short accounts because I dont want to headache the margin calculation. And TD doesnt allow cash accounts anymore i think. So i use IBKR for etf and growth stocks, plus lower comms. I highly recommend having both.

you are using TDA for short selling?
isn't the margin interest rate for TDA is rather high?
