Going short doesn't totally mean shorting the shares. I use TD for options selling, much more powerful charts and execution.

That said, i do use it for short selling 😅😄
Margin interests kick in only if you hold overnight, and yes TD has one of the highest, if not the highest interests so its not good to hold shorts.

I split long and short accounts because I dont want to headache the margin calculation. And TD doesnt allow cash accounts anymore i think. So i use IBKR for etf and growth stocks, plus lower comms. I highly recommend having both.
ah I see.
didn't know there is no margin interest for intraday trading, have not done any short selling, I have been using cash account.

but what is your position size when you are going long?
IBKR charges big commission, as position size increases.
e.g. this week, I paid IBKR USD$42 for buying and USD$44.11 for selling 8400 shares of ACHN?
whereas TDA-SG charges a flat commission of USD$10.65 per trade + free access to streaming real-time data.

Margin is like a tool, depends how you use it. For investing, i use IBKR cash account. For trading, TD margin account.

My long depends monthly quota actually. Something like DCA, but I choose between etf or stocks that month. Definitely not large size.

I have a suggestion: why not do partial transfer shares to TD for selling? Of course opportunity costs kick in during that 4-5 days (i tested, better & faster you initiate the transfer during US hours, not sure why but faster than you do it during SG hours.) This is my way to DCA selling when I want to retire.

Btw, TD commission can even be lowered further. Once you do enough X trades or accumulated some commission threshold, can open dialog with their support desk to negotiate on commission hahaha! Their support desk is top notch and especially friendly. Once you keep getting the same person, you can easily strike up a conversation with him, be nice and friendly, he can help you one ;)

How much is that X number? I have only chalked up around $40usd of commissions. I doubt they will entertain me.

I notice TD Ameritrade is sponsoring Money Mind. How is this broker?

It has one of the best analytics platform amongst the brokerages. I use it for all my analysis, charting, screening... short of automating trading.

I have been using TD for several years, after being forced to switch out when E*TRADE closed. Haven’t had any issues, trades are quick and accurate. Think or Swim app has some good analytics and live CNBC broadcast. Just be careful putting more than $60k with them unless you are US person or have a way to exempt US estate tax. As mentioned elsewhere on the forum, major investments for most people here should be on the London exchange.

May I ask why $60k? Is there any additional taxes to pay after you have more than $60k with them?

$60k is the exemption on estate tax that non-US people get on any US based assets in the event of their demise. A quick google search will fill in the blanks if you are not aware of this.

This means your beneficiaries will only receive only 60 cents on every dollar above $60k if it was sitting in a US brokerage account.

While you are alive, the only taxes you’ll pay as a non-US person are 30% on any dividends. Capital gains are tax free.

On the London Exchange, if you buy Irish based ETFs (often mentioned in this forum), you’ll only pay 15% tax on dividends and won’t be subject to estate tax at all.

May I ask why $60k? Is there any additional taxes to pay after you have more than $60k with them?

What's the best commission negotiated for Options at TDA? I know some US accounts get as low as $0.30 per contract. Non-US accounts seems to be treated differently.

hi all, i just finished a 3 day intensive course. They are using this platform as well and through them, the commission is a standard $1.25, even better than $1.50 mentioned earlier in this thread. Indeed it is very legit.

TD is good for charting/research and intuitiveness especially for options trading over IBKR.
