Will be going Japan for 5 days in Nov..

Just converted $1000 SGD to JPY (@105.1) at Youtrip to secure the rate.

How much cash do i need to bring for a family of 3?

I read that Train tickets cannot top up using credit card.
Depend on you itinerary,

If you are going to alot of outdoor places like temples, national parks, or farms, mabye 2/3 cash, 1/3 youtrip.

can the youtrip card be used like those IC cards (suica, pasmo, etc) to tap and pay at conbini or those small kiosks?

As long as the payment terminal has the Mastercard logo. Or inform the cashier "Mastercard" to pay.

hmm, not sure, that’s why asking. Those convenient stores they have terminals that can pay using suica, pasmo, etc but I don’t think it is a cc terminal.

Sorry, thought you asked about trains - you can use at most places that accepts credit cards
Yes, i understand it is a cc card so it works on cc terminals but want to know whether it can be tapped on those terminals that accept suica, pasmo, etc. don’t think those are cc terminals though hence want to know if anyone has experience on this.

that is why i said ask the cashier, or tell the cashier u're paying by mastercard/visa.

konbinis will accept credit card. some of the newer ones even have terminals for u to choose from the touchscreen what mode of payment u're using.

See this utube for 7-11 payment:

Yes, will do when i am there but just wanted to know if anyone here already has prior experience. So far seems no one though.

I paid for coffee at 7-11 by inserting my YouTrip card into one of the readers at the counter.

no point replying le no one has prior experience
paiseh lah, my fault. I didn’t know how to say it. I know it is a cc, so it works like a cc, and at any shop, i can ask if it can be used just like asking whether they accept cc. What i meant to ask was whether it has stored value function such that at terminals where people tap it with pasmo, suica, etc, i could also use the youtrip to tap like IC cards. Based on many replies so far, it does not seem to have this stored value function like pasmo/suica which is what i wanted to know. My bad. Need to up my language skills.😅

if you are in Tokyo, not an issue. The smaller convenience stores will have cc terminals.

if you are in Towada, then no. The smaller convenience stores will not have the cc terminals.

YouTrip has stored value. It is a debit card. No value inside, cannot use.

Huh… there must be $ in youtrip before one can use it. It functions like a debit card. U can put S$ into it, just it in japan and it will auto-convert to yen when u pay with it. Use it in USA and it will auto convert to us$ when u use it.

Anyone have experience with youtrip receiving refund? A couple years back, some refunds to my youtrip card took months to be refunded even though the merchant refunded fast.

I recently booked a hotel on booking.com but i canceled it. got the refund the day after. but take note of the exchange rates' fluctations.

For youtrip card, i can either exchange my sgd to jpy before the trip or use the sgd in the wallet while in Japan? The difference is whether i lock in the exchange rate before the trip or let it auto convert on the day of transaction?

If I have leftover jpy in the wallet, can I exchange it back to sgd?
