Hi All, I am a newbie to mountain biking. Currently looking at a hardtail. Mostly riding on PCN and occasional light off-road and beaten path. I have a few questions to ask:

1. Should I go for triple chainset (40-30-22) or double chainset (38-24)?
2. What is taper headtube and what is the advantages?

Thanks.

1) Not that big of a difference. Since mostly PCN get the triple since it has more gearing options for tarmac flats but if double's component is better go for it.

2) Normal 1 1/8 tube is a straight cylinder for a straight steerer tube. Tapered the bottom flares to 1.5 for a triangular steerer tube.

Spot the difference?

Tapered has better stability by virtue of geometry but frankly the performance gain is minimal. More a marketing move to force people to upgrade.

Normal straight headtube can put a tapered fork with the use of an external 1.5 cup. Tapered tube can put a straight fork with the use of an internal reducer cup. The latter is easier to execute, the former may require some machining.

So get a Tapered tube if buying Brand new or even 2nd hand. Most new or highend single crown forks will come tapered. Saves you the trouble and has a higher resale value.

Thank you for the explanation. Appreciate that.

Double is enough, as a matter of fact, i would choose single if its for trail purpose only.

My triple only use middle one 99% of the time.

Anyone like me the hand will feel numb after a certain amount of distance on the bike? I am wonder if my stem is too long, hence I have to reach harder to grab the handlebar. I'm only 163 in height. Current stem length is by default should be 80-90m.

Sounds like your palms are supporting the weight of your body as you lean forward to cycle. I suppose your riding position is more aggressive and aerodynamic?

In this case, you need wide grips to reduce the pressure exerted between your palms and the grips. I recommend Ergon grips.

I am using one pair now.. and i don't even need to wear gloves even when doing 128km round island.

Saw the advantages of a budget bike, spotted one fairly new harris mtb parked at the wet market, no lock was used and was quite surprised no one make any attempt. Then later saw the owner came out of the market with some gorceries and ride off. budget bike allow you to run errands in peace lol.

I want my ride style to be less aggressive since I mostly do city riding. Commuting from point A to B. My handle bar length is 640mm should I change to a longer one ?

Me. I bought a new old stock bianchi 1998 veloce from eBay. Price about $2200 after shipping and no gst.

I have since bought white bar tape for it.

The vintage Bianchi really looks sweet.

Actually, I interested in hearing opinions from fellow riders.

Those who had ride before different materials on similar geometry. There will of course be diff in the weight department.

But how do you rate the ride feel/quality difference after you transit from one material to another?

actually, if you park at open area with lots of ppl, no one will make an attempt, those thieves cant be sure if the owner/frens are just standing around :)

Unknown ett

Flexes around the chain stay area can feel the wheels rubbing . only a short ride so can't gauge much

Merida reacto ett 53.5 ultegra with FSA omega carbon
