Anyone tried buying foldie from Taobao? Does it comes assembled (but folded) ?Not sure if it is worth doing.

There's a guy in taobao shopping doing mass import, not sure if he is still doing it.you can do a search in taobao shopping.

Hollowtech is the more modern one, which the current Shimano groupset are using.

Square Taper is for the much older generation of groupset or those cheaper crankset found on budget bikes.

You can go Shimano cycling exhibition hall at Stadium... It shows you the cross section of hollowtech crank and BB. Because it is hollow, it is lighter and yet able to possess very high strength due to their forging technology.

When I change from Kinetix Supra cranks (stock low end Tern cranks) to ultegra crank + dura ace BB, the effect is very evident when cycling long gentle up slope, climb steep slopes or long distance. I don't need to drop so many gears just to climb slopes.

I don't think i will even want to walk up a 45 degree slope.

Correct.

HollowTech has outside bottom bracket, it is much better because the spindle is fixed, larger and stiffer to minimize flexing so power transfer is also better.

the steepest slope i know ( not really a slope ) is at bedok ave 2, there is a staircase leading up to a hill (about 12m?), there is a 50cm width skirt at the side. i think about 35/45 degrees?

anyway, not possible to walk it up, no nid say cycle

square taper

pros
the bearings are located on the inside of the frame, means the chainline is slightly better, if you got knee problems, this kind is much better.

cheaper bearings than hollowtech, the high end stuff are not ex

cons
cheaper crank and bearings if you over use after awhile will totally spoil

need to use good tools to mount anad remove the square taper if not you will round the mounting parts.

might have to tighten cranks once in awhile.



hollowtech 2.

pros
bigger bearings since they are externally mounted, lesser chances of failure

easier to install and remove, the cups mounting points are much bigger.

cranks are supposedly more stiffer since the whole crankset now extends through the frame as opposed to just being mounted on the square taper

chainline not as good but its okay.
