I have pains after rides >20km using the stock saddle that comes with my MTB. The someone told me that the saddle could be too soft and I switched to a hard saddle. No more pains for long rides. After that, I had been using hard saddles for all my bikes since, except for my vintage bike that uses a banana saddle. That one got nothing available to change.

thanks for sharing your experiences

Gona get a mtb, however for my height, 17" is the best fit. I test ride on the 17" with 29er. somehow i find it too big for me or not used to it. however i test ride 15" with 650b and find it more comfortable. my worry is getting the wrong frame size and regret later. headache man. never had such worries on foldies coz only one size fits all lol
There is one test I use to see if the MTB frame fits me, but I take into consideration doing trails, so not applicable to PCN riding.

I stand on the pedals, and lean all the way back, put my ass behind the saddle. Because this technique is important to shift the centre of gravity backwards when going downhill on a trail. If you ride normally going downhill, the bike will flip over because the weight will be on the front wheel/fork.

If you can't shift your ass behind the saddle, the frame is too big for you.

Most of the computers can sync online directly? I think it will be troublesome to use USB port.

How much should I budget for an average one?

Btw where is a good place to buy or see many shimano shoes? Looking for non cleat mtb shoes.

Not sure if any but if have, definitely not cheap..Would likely have to sync to phone(Software via wifi/BT) then from there upload online..

Garmin Edge 200 has to plug in to PC via USB, upload thru Garmin Connect..

If wana sync online direct, use apps on the mobile phone..

Edge 200 is about mid 100 to close 200 from local sources i guess, i brought mine from taobao with sram holder for about S$130 including shipping..

Why not get a hybrid which is closer to road bike specs?

1) sizing wise you are right. If you buy a new road bike, nego with the shop to throw in a basic bike fitting.
2)Just ride slowly on pathways. Rmb that the law states that you are not suppose to ride on pavement.
3)You will get used to it soon enough. You can use mtb spd, personal preference.
4) whats your budget

*snip*

1. unless you have really weird proportions you dont really need a bike fit. Im 175cm but i use a 53 top tube road bike, i have short legs though and poor flexibility though

2.takes time to get back the confidence to ride on the road, i got hit by a driver before, lucky that im still alive

3.who cares about what mtb cleats youre riding, i have friends who use road saddles for mtb and mtb saddles for road.

the road bike handlebar has a flat portion, just that brakes are not within reach, you can install those cx flat bar style levers though

4.I like the trek geometry(ex though) and giant pricing(havent really see the geometry) the polygons are not too bad too

dont really know your budget though..

Thank you SD, Sn.

Sorry didn't get back to you completely. I was trawling TGP and getting a sense of what's on the market. Managed to buy a nice Giant TCX SLR 2. Figure it's a good introduction to road cycling but still allows me to cycle on pavements and all (not allowed, I know. But I will build up the courage to get onto the road eventually!) Came with a set of 700x35 tyres which matches my current hybrid so I don't have to fear the tyres/wheels falling into uncovered drain grilles.

Now to slowly build my fitness back up! Any slow riding groups around the East?
